The Department of Applied English aims to train students to be professionals in the English language, and has proactively integrated various resources on campus to develop professional theories and practical applications of the English language for its students. Because of these activities, students can not only realize the importance of teamwork and communication, but also obtain advanced skills such as expression of emotions by interacting with each other. Meanwhile, these activities can provide students with opportunities to experience foreign cultures, thereby enhancing students’ language abilities and fostering international culture exchanges.

Activity 1: The 12th Graduation Play “Oedipus Rex” (05/14/2014)

Since the Department of Applied English was founded at I-Shou University, the graduation play has become a tradition with the objective to enhance students’ listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills. In addition to helping students obtain a good command of the English language and a basic knowledge of Western culture, the English drama performance offers them a stage to show themselves. Therefore, this activity is to present a perfect English drama performance through collaboration, communication and coordination among the entire faculty and students of the Department of Applied English.

The 12th English drama performance “Oedipus Rex” is an adaptation of the ancient Greek tragedy “Oedipus” with more popular and modern performing arts and English conversations. The Department of Applied English spent one year preparing, rehearsing, as well as deploying almost 110 people for the annual English drama performance in order to actively demonstrate our English expertise and multiple cultures on the stage and present a perfect performance.

Activity 2: Exhibition of Teaching Achievements-Exhibition of Art Works and Animation(05/27/2014 ~ 05/31/2014)

To show students’ mastering of diverse specialized knowledge, the Department of Applied English held the “Exhibition of Art Works and Animation” this year, in which students displayed their art works and provided their creative concepts by integrating arts and the skills acquired from the Multimedia Production and Application course. This exhibition particularly let students demonstrate their artistic conception through creative design of pictures, color-matching, as well as descriptions in both Chinese and English. In addition, we used 242 geometric design works by the teachers and students to decorate the rose geometrical wall. From this wall, we can see every creator’s design concept in lines, circles, and colors. Furthermore, this exhibition displayed students’ art works created for their courses, including children’s picture books, props and costumes of the 12th Graduation Play, and animation works from all previous years. About 60 students from the Department of Applied English contributed their art works and creative ideas and took part in the exhibition arrangement and reception this time. This is not only an art exhibition but also an achievement of the Department of Applied English in creating a multiple learning environment and teaching.
