The thesis of the article is how certain medical procedures produce stress yet understanding the procedure can start by using Therapeutic Play which ultimately reduces anxiousness. The authors of “Therapeutic Play in the Pediatric Urgent and Emergency Department: An Integrative Literature Review” are credible because health-care workers, including nurses, are providing their opinions of Therapeutic Play and stating its effectiveness. In my opinion, saying this article is well-argued is an understatement. The authors state facts such as play is used as a language in the medical field and how play allows courage and calmness to reduce anxiety in procedures. There is also a table with other stats and studies not conducted by the authors to show Therapeutic Play’s importance. It is relevant to my project because I am focusing on if Therapeutic Play is effective for people suffering from mental or physical disabilities. The article provides me with more than enough evidence to prove to my reader how important Therapeutic Play is for those suffering in the hospital. It also provides a lot of insight into the treatments and situations that result in most stress and how TP is effective with these medical procedures. The article offers me many facts that I would like to use and arguments I want to borrow. Having the health-care professionals state their opinion on Therapeutic Play’s effectiveness is a powerful argument. These people are consistently on the front line and see how anxiety can induce lack of trust: something the professionals surely do not want to see from their patients. I will be using some of the nurse’s quotes from this source to demonstrate a professional’s opinion of this matter!

I chose this article because it focuses on my psychology discipline. The thesis discussed the psychological effects of children viewing their own deaths and suffering through playful representations of death. It is a reliable source considering it is from the Department of Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina. The article examines how consciousness, a chapter topic I read in almost all my psychology courses, relates to death and imaginative therapeutic play. I believe this article is well argued considering the number of examples they give for the multi-faceted nature of play. It includes the humorous nature, demonstrative nature, and communal nature of play. This article enhances my project considering it focuses on the benefits of play on the mind. It states arguments such as how play can be more effective in healing than medicine itself! In psychology, especially my cognitive processes course, we studied how the mind is such a powerful muscle and how it can induce healing with a right mindset. This source is very important to my argument because it is all about the well-ness of the mind, and I believe one’s thoughts are an extremely important part of restoring injuries and illness. I will use my source in a paragraph that focuses on my disciplines. It will aid to my argument considering the article enriches the reader’s knowledge of psychology and the role of the mind in Therapeutic Play.

Brittany Wilson and Dee Ray’s article about Play Therapy discusses their experiment of children who received sessions of child-centered play therapy vs. those who received no emotional therapy. The main line of the conclusion was that teachers saw little to no differences between the children who received play therapy and those who didn’t, and parents saw a difference in aggression with more self-regulation and empathy. The study can be considered credible because Brittany Wilson and Dee Ray are part of the Department of Counseling and Higher Education at the University of North Texas. Because of this, it leads me to believe these two scholars have extensive knowledge about the social-emotional effects of Therapeutic Play. There are a lot of facts and background information of developmental patterns of childhood aggression, empathy and self-regulation as components of aggression, and current interventions for childhood aggression. This added information enhances the credibility of their study. It is relevant to my project because I am discussing the improvements seen because of play therapy and this study focuses on researching a certain benefit of play therapy: the reduction of anger. However, I want to be critical of their results in my project. The source will be used as a counter argument because I believe with more studies on this subject, a different result could be concluded rather than what the experimenters found with the teachers. I believe there have not been enough studies conducted, and therefore I believe there needs to be further research done in order for this study to be considered useful.
