The theory category allows students to test their music knowledge in a written environment. Students go to the designated theory room during Festival to take the theory test. Tests are not timed, and students have as long as they would like during the given hours to take the test (it is two pages in length, front and back). Students who participate in this category show off their knowledge of the written rules of music, and will earn points towards a trophy in this category, just as they do in the piano solo event.

Please note that higher theory levels can take approximately 90 minutes to complete, so please budget your time appropriately! The best way to gauge how long you will need is to take a practice theory test at home and time how long that took you. Please talk with your teacher for a practice theory test.
