The NFMC Festival is an annual event promoting new American composers. It is an excellent opportunity for music students to play for outside adjudicators, receiving valuable feedback and performance experience. There are multiple events in which students can perform. In the piano solo event, students play two pieces: one contemporary American required selection and one chosen with his or her teacher conforming to the festival standards. There are also duet, hymn, folk, and pop music events, composition, essay writing, and music theory events. The student is given a point score and a rating (Superior/Excellent/Good). After earning a certain number of points in the same event the student will receive a trophy recognizing his or her hard work. There are four levels of trophies that students can earn, and trophies can be earned for each event (for example, a piano solo trophy and a music theory trophy).
