Who we are
The Victoria and Tasmania Student Chapter is a student organisation established in April, 2020. The chapter is part of the ISPOR and the ISPOR Student network and is a collaboration between the University of Melbourne, Monash University, Deakin University and the University of Tasmania. Our Chapter is also part of the Australian network and collaborates with other chapters such as the Sydney Student and ECR Student Chapter and the ISPOR Australia Chapter.
The Student Chapter caters to students with interest in health economics and health services/health outcomes research especially students from the disciplines of health economics, pharmacology, public health, epidemiology and economics.
Our mission is to build capacity of students to foster the development of excellence in the field of health economics and health service/outcomes research by organising events, educational seminars and interactions with members of the pharmaceutical industry, health-related organizations, and academia.

Tamrat Befekadu Abebe— President
Tamrat is a third year Ph.D. student in the Centre for Medicine Use and Safety unit at Monash University. His research focused on exploring the health and cost burden of cardiovascular diseases for the coming decades. Tamrat is passionate about dynamic multistate Markov model and implementing Mendelian randomisation technique in health economics and outcomes research to demonstrate causal association of cardiovascular risk factors and quality of life. Tamrat has a background in Pharmacy and studied Health economics, policy and management at Masters level. In his leisure time, Tamrat enjoys watching movies and football, playing video games and visiting parks.
Alexander (Alex) is a final year PhD student in the Health Economics unit at Melbourne University. His research is focused on the methods and challenges of measurement and valuation of paediatric instruments, specifically the 0-5-year-olds. Alex previously completed an MPH and BBioMed Hon from the University of Otago (New Zealand), and worked as a clinical project manager looking at sudden cardiac death in under 50 year olds. In his free time, Alex enjoys going for hikes, landscape photography, exploring new restaurants/cafes, and binging tv shows (especially anything Marvel/DC related!).
Yordanos Gizachew Yeshitila — Secretary
Yordanos is a third-year PhD student in Health Economics at Deakin University, with a strong background in reproductive and women's health. Her research centers on evaluating the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of maternity care models for women from refugee backgrounds. To optimize perinatal health outcomes for these women, she will use decision tree analysis to assess different care models cost effectiveness. In her free time, she enjoys walking, hiking, and watching football, especially the English Premier League, where she’s a devoted Manchester United fan. Yordanos loves coffee!
Hai Phan - Treasurer
Hai is a first-year PhD student at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research, University of Tasmania. Her research project examines the cost-effectiveness of the Primary Trauma Care course implemented in Vietnam, which has been shown to be clinically effective. Before her PhD in Australia, Hai was a lecturer and researcher at the School of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, Hanoi Medical University, Vietnam. In her free time, Hai enjoys exploring new cuisines, cafe hopping, and film photography.
