The International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros, otherwise known as ISPMB, is the oldest wild horse and burro organization in the country. It has made a long-term commitment to protecting the wild horses and burros in the United States.
ISPMB's history spans more than 60 years of extraordinary accomplishments in conservation, including being the instrumental force, along with its first president, Wild Horse Annie, in moving Congress to provide permanent protection for all wild horses and burros on public lands with the Wild Horses and Burros Act of 1971.
There are various programs designed to protect wild horses and burros on public lands that ISPMB developed for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the government agency responsible for carrying out the Act's provisions. One of the more notable programs is the adoption program, which has placed more than 250,000 wild horses and burros into adoptive homes.
The International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros' philosophy has led to the successful mediation and collaboration of diverse groups, thus paving the way for the conservation of wild horses and burros in the country.
