I am Dr Ismet Gocer. I work at Southampton Solent University as a Postdoctoral Researcher. I am working on the SEAGUARD project. I apply advanced CNN and Computer Vision analyses on multimodal frameworks. I am teaching the Introduction to AI & Data Science course to Applied AI and Data Science MSc students. I attended the SMI Conference in London on 16th September 2025 and presented this project to industry professionals and regulatory bodies. I attended the SEAGUARD Annual Assembly and presented two topics in Athens, Greece, on October 22–23, 2025.
I completed my Brexit project by applying Fourier-based time series, NLP and LLMs analyses at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, UK.. Additionally, I joined the Innovation & Industry Engagement in the Inspire Hub and worked on the Crack Map project in Ilosta as a Computer Vision Engineer. We are developing a Digital AI Monitoring Software for crack detection on wind turbines. My responsibilities include extracting images from videos using OpenCV, labelling photos with tools such as MakeSense, CVAT, and Roboflow, and developing a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model on YOLOv8 for crack detection. I created a CNN via Transfer Learning models and got a 99.7% accuracy score on the VGG16 (Link).
I have a bachelor's and master’s degree in mathematics and a PhD in economics. I am passionate about econometrics, economics, mathematics, statistics, and data science. I got my associate professorship in macroeconomics in Turkey in September 2014. I have authored an Econometrics book, several book chapters, and 100 scientific articles covering econometrics, economics, finance, and data science. I have more than 3050 citations and am ranked 3rd in Turkey in econometrics. I've been among Turkey's top academics for six years. (Link). My h-index is 31, and my i10 index is 66 (Link).
My main research interests are R&D, Innovation, Productivity, High-Technology Exports, foreign direct investment (FDI), saving-investment balance, current account balance, central banking, econometrics, and data science. My PhD thesis title is "Productivity and Macroeconomic Effects of Foreign Direct Investment: The Case of Turkey, China and India."
I worked as an academic in Turkey, Hungary, and the UK. I gave economics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and mathematics courses to bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. students. I supervised master's theses in Turkey (Link, Link). I delivered lectures on Advanced Econometric Analyses in English to international master's and Ph.D. students in Hungary. I participated in doctoral thesis juries and prepared thesis reports.
Besides economics and econometrics, I am passionately committed to Data Science. I attended a Data Science (TechPro Education), a Machine Learning (EmKa Academy), and a Cloud Computing (Google&Istanbul Data Academy) boot camp, I improved my skills related to Python, Data Analytics (Exploratory Data Analyses, Data Visualization, Power BI, Tableau), Data Science (Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Large Language Models (LLMs) and Generative AI). My first ANN article was published in 2013, and in 2023 alone, I published 2 Machine Learning and 4 Deep Learning articles. I edited a GenAI book in 2023 and a Reinforcement Deep Learning book in 2024. I gave Statistics, Machine Learning, CNN and Computer Vision courses to international Data Science students at TechPro Education. You can see my data science portfolio from here. I published a Machine Learning book in October 2024 and a Computer Vision book in April 2025 on Amazon. I attended IT talks 1, 2, 3 and 4.
There is still much knowledge to learn and share, and there is a long way to go on the path of science.
