BTCS Summer Camp STEM and Literacy (iSLICEE*) Learning
On June 7th-June 9th, 2021, ETSU students, faculty and students at University School worked with the Bristol Tennessee City Schools Summer Camp to integrate technology with English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science into their afternoon activities. The outreach activities were led by two graduate students- Emily Giles and Hannah Hess, and Dr. Chihche Tai.
The team primarily worked with upcoming 4th and 5th grade students each day. The team had 3 activities implemented, each focusing on different subjects. Emily Giles, iSLICEE fellow in 2019-20 (i19) and a current iSLICEE program assistant, created an ELA lesson that integrated writing and Bluebots. Hannah Hess (i19), iSLICEE program assistant, created a Math lesson that integrated polygons and Ozobots. Dr. Chihche Tai, iSLICEE program coordinator, created two science lessons that integrated Sounds/Waves and Force/Motion with Arduino Science Journal and a variety of hands-on activities. Additionally, three ETSU students: Laura Watson (i20), Bailey Wheatley (i21), Kailee Amburgey (i21), and two middle and high school students, Emily Tai and Alvin Tai, at University School supported these learning opportunities. The BTCS Summer Camp allowed both past and present iSLICEE fellows to provide services to integrate technology into the curriculum and benefited elementary students in STEM and Literacy learning.
