The International Open University (IOU) is a private distance education university headquartered in Kanifing, The Gambia. It was founded as the Islamic Online University by Bilal Philips in 2007 and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees.

The university was Initially established in 2001,[3] but temporarily ceased operations. In April 2007, it reopened under the name Islamic Online University with a greater offering of completely free short courses.[3] On January 13, 2020, it was announced that the institution's name has been changed to the International Open University.[4][5]

In 2018, the International Open University's programs were ranked among the six best online Middle Eastern Studies programs by Successful Student,[8] although by June 2020 they had been removed from this list.[9]

In 2021, the online Kenyan newspaper Tuko ranked the International Open University among the top accredited distance learning universities in Africa, along with the University of Johannesburg, the University of Zambia, the University of South Africa , the University of Nairobi and the University of Pretoria, in addition to few other universities.[10]

Everything is online based so it does require lots of discipline. I have heard of students dropping out because they do not have the discipline to do self-paced courses in a timely manner. One student who dropped out told me that he needs to be in the same classroom as the teacher and be able to interact, otherwise, he cannot remain attentive. Studying online successfully also means not being busy by opening other screens while the lecture is playing. You have to be focused.

In aqeeda, the university follows Athari () creed and in fiqh it is mainly Hanbali influenced. Dr. Bilal Phillips only teaches the aqeedah courses, first two semesters of Arabic, and the evolution of fiqh course, which discusses how the four schools of thought in jurisprudence came to be.

The findings show that the preachers put themselves in a position of authority primarily through their expertise in quoting and interpreting authoritative sacred texts. Preachers' positioning is fluid; they position themselves as a person who delivers God's words, as storytellers, or take a more authoritative position by employing direct commands. It is common in Islamic communities for mothers to have responsibility to teach and raise children. In sermons, the preachers tell stories of paragons of Islamic parenting such as Luqman, male Biblical prophets, and stories of Muhammad to inspire fathers to play their role in helping mothers raise children.First Page
