Bavarian Beer Gardens
Bavarian beer gardens are a special type of outdoor restaurant originating from breweries being allowed to serve beer and bread but no other food to costumers. Nowadays this restriction is lifted but there are still some specialties regarding this type of restaurant. The visitor is usually allowed to bring its own food, just the drinks have to be bought from the restaurant, usually at central places, the servers often just collect the empty glasses. Some traditional food can often be bought though. If you are not sure if you are allowed to bring your own food you are recommended to just ask briefly. Also, sometimes in some parts of the beer garden you can bring your own food, in the others the food is served.
If you take the option to visit a beer garden (e.g. the nearby ‘Hirschgarten’, Munichs largest beer garden), you can buy some traditional food at a nearby supermarket on the way, e.g. Rewe (Rosa-Bavarese-Straße 1a, 80639 München) or Aldi (Wotanstraße 9c, 80639 München). To a beergarden visit traditionally ‘Radi’, ‘Obadzda’, ‘Brezn’, ‘Wurstsalat’ are taken. Warm dishes like ‘Steckerlfisch’ or ‘Schweinshaxn’ or giant pretzels can usually be bought at self service facilities in the beer garden.
