Personal Development
During my time at IMCH I learned a lot. I learned a lot from the nonprofit side and the challenges that they face, and regardless of these challenges they still find a way to do things. I learned that advocating for others and myself is very important. This internship also helped me with my time management skills and improved my organizational skills. They also taught me how to get outside of my comfort zone and realize that I have to be open-minded because I will not always be in a situation where I will be comfortable with a task. It taught me how to be comfortable with the uncomfortable. It also made me aware of how Indiana has a lot to work on to have better healthcare for our minority communities.
Academic Connections
The knowledge that I have gained from the courses I have taken in the HSM program has helped me greatly. Not only has it helped me in my internship but in other organizations, too. Some courses such as Introduction to Public Health, Ethics, and High Risk Health Behavior and Harm Reduction helped guide me to the issues addressed at my internship. Other courses have helped me to address issues presented in the organization not only internally but externally as well. These classes have helped me build confidence in my field.
