HIGHLIGHTS
NBC10 PHILADELPHIA
The morning of October 14th, 2024 was one of my busiest on the assignment desk. My regular shift was 12am-8am. Most of the stories in that time frame were crime-related. The morning of the 14th included local crime and a national story - an NJ Transit train operator killed in a crash. As an assignment editor/desk assistant, I listened to scanners, called police and various officials to confirm and collect information and sent reporters and crews to different scenes to collect information on the ground. At the desk I served as the starting point of the stories NBC10 reported on. The stories that broke on the morning of October 14th are what I am most proud of.
NBCU ACADEMY NEXT LEVEL SUMMIT: KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE
In the fall of 2023, I began my internship at the NBC Network Desk. At the same time, William Paterson University was beginning their partnership with the NBCU Academy. I was asked to be the student reporter to represent William Paterson at the Next Level Summit. I wrote the script, rehearsed with WPTV and the people at NBC, and introduced the university and students to the summit’s audience. It was an honor to be a part of the event and I am so glad to help the future students of William Paterson start their careers. (Timestamp 32:18)
As an intern at the NBC Network Desk, I spent my days newsgathering breaking information for national stories. These included the Kansas City Chief's parade shooting, the arrests at various CUNY schools that had pro-Palestinian encampments, and the man that self-immolated outside the courthouse where the Trump Hush-Money Trial was held. The NetDesk gave me valuable multitasking and communication skills and - most notably - taught me to work under pressure in a newsroom. During my internship I also received two bylines as a result of my work.
PATERSON POLICE
In February of 2023, Paterson Police killed a Black anti-violence advocate during a mental health crisis. I covered this story with Brave New Radio News by reaching out to members of the Paterson community.
AFT WORKING WITHOUT A CONTRACT
In August of 2023 at the start of the fall semester, the AFT at William Paterson and across New Jersey was working without a contract and continues to do so today. I interviewed Professor Chriss Williams, an avid member of the union at William Paterson, about what working without a contract means and what the union does for the faculty and staff.
In the fall of 2021, news of financial hardships and layoffs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic hit the William Paterson Community. The Board of Trustees announced that 100 faculty and staff members would be laid off in addition to cutting programs. I, along with the Brave New Radio Feature News Team, covered the student and faculty reaction to this news.
In the Spring of 2023, I interned for TAPinto Wayne, a hyperlocal news outlet for the town of Wayne, NJ. There I improved my print writing and learned the intricacies of local government.
When I moved to Philadelphia in 2024 for work, I couldn't help but notice the amazing work of nonprofits and organizations around the city. I also didn't want to lose my video production and editing skills. I bought a camera and I decided to reach out to people on social media, asking for groups that do good in the Philadelphia community. I booked shoots, brought my camera, shot b-roll, conducted interviews and edited them into longer-form packages. The series is called Brotherly Love. While Philly can be rough around the edges, there are always community members helping community members. That is what I try to highlight through this project.
