Assignments

This course has two types of assignments:

  1. Team assignments walk you through an iterative design process and make up the majority of work done in this class. You will do these assignments in teams of four to six people chosen in week two.

  2. Individual assignments are less frequent and submitted by one person. These assignments are generally done alone, but some allow limited collaboration.

Here are some things to keep in mind while working on assignments:

    • Don’t procrastinate: You will have four weeks to complete each team assignment, but it will be virtually impossible to complete all work at the last minute. It’s best to start early, work little by little, and get feedback as you go. Each team assignment comes with a suggested timetable to help you plan your time.

    • Cite your sources: We want you to “steal” good ideas wherever you find them, but we also need you to avoid plagiarism and violations of intellectual property. To guard against this, just remember to cite the source of any big idea or content that you reuse. For more information, see the Collaboration Policy.

Rubrics

Each project iteration has a grading rubric at the bottom that explains what a good submission looks like. Line items in these rubrics come in two types:

    • Normal items describe the basic qualities your submission should fulfill. Meeting all of these requirements alone will give you a B on the assignment.

    • Above and Beyond items are indicated by a (+) and explain how you can make an excellent submission. If your submission stands out from the others in the ways that these rubric items describe, you can get an A on the assignment. Don’t push yourself to do these things until you have met all the normal rubric items.

Results

Assignment grades will be distributed through eLearn.

Peer Evaluation

Normally, all team members will receive the same team grade. However, at the end of the semester, you will submit an evaluation of your teammates. If this evaluation indicates a clear imbalance in the contribution of team members then some team members' grades could be adjusted up or down.

Class Participation

You will get participation by doing the following things: Total 4 points X 8 weeks (1 2 3 5 6 9 10 11) = 32 points

    1. Attendance will be given 1 point. No points will be given after 45 minutes. Must be present throughout the class session

    2. Participating during class by answering a question or asking a question. The question or answer should be considered constructive to be given a point. Maximum of 2 points will be given for each student to encourage all student to participate.

    3. Instructors discretion for student involvement in the course learning. This may include but not limited to review of project progress, clarification of projects outside of class, emails with research on a topic discussed in class (with sources cited/URL link), etc. Maximum of 1 point will be given for each student to encourage all student to participate.
