Recent advances in methods, algorithms, computational power, and energetic efficiency have made the deployment of multi-robot systems (MRS) a reality. Moreover, with the rise of new control, learning and perception algorithms, the research community has shown increasing interest in such systems, primarily demonstrated in structured and known environments. For successfully introducing MRS-based systems in real-world fields—e.g., construction, agriculture, healthcare, etc.—there is a need to address more complex and intelligent cooperative behaviors. An additional and increasingly critical dimension of this challenge lies in heterogeneity: the coordination of diverse robotic platforms (ground, aerial, marine, etc.), each with different capabilities, dynamics, and sensing modalities. Heterogeneous MRS promise enhanced robustness, flexibility, and task performance, but also raise unique control, planning, and communication challenges that remain open.
This 2nd workshop on Real-World Challenges in Multi-Robot Cooperation aims to address questions such as: how do we move from simple tasks to intelligent, cooperative missions among heterogeneous robots? What are the new frontiers and key challenges in this context? The objective is to collectively explore novel applications in which heterogeneous MRS could be developed and to identify and tackle the obstacles hindering their broader deployment in real-world environments.
