What is College Recruiting?
What is the process?
The landscape of college recruiting has changed dramatically over the years, and continues to evolve. Being proactive in your recruitment isn't a good idea, it's required. Almost all college coaches follow a similar flow in their recruiting process. They see an athlete and identify if they can play in their program, they evaluate the athlete athletically, they compare the athlete to others they are considering, they make offers to athletes they want in their program. Think of it as a funnel. Lots of student-Athletes get identified, few get offers. There's a huge amount of time and effort that goes into each step, but those are the basics.
Understanding the steps and knowing where you are in the process is vital to your recruiting successes. Very, very few athletes skip a step in the process. The ultimate goal of The Recruiting Realm is to find the best fit for student-athletes athletically, academically, financially, and geographically.
The goal of a college coach is to build the best program possible. Coaches are not required to respond to every athlete who contacts them, nor are they required to notify athletes when they are no longer being recruited.
This can be frustrating for families, but it is a normal part of the recruiting journey. Learning how coaches evaluate, prioritize, and communicate helps student-athletes approach recruiting with the right expectations and strategy.
Recruiting rules vary by organization and division.
NCAA Division I, II, and III
NAIA
NJCAA (JUCO), which includes three divisions
Not all coaches follow the same recruiting calendars or communication rules. For example, NAIA coaches are not bound by the NCAA recruiting calendar. When you hear that “all coaches can’t contact athletes until a certain date,” that is not always true.
Understanding these differences helps families avoid misinformation and missed opportunities.
