What is HEMA?

HEMA is an umbrella term that encompasses many traditions and styles of martial arts originating in Europe that span from the Pankration of classical Greece to Bartitsu of the Victorian Era. At Iron Crown we practice Kunst des Fechtens, which translates roughly to “the Art of Fencing” or “the Art of Fighting,” and is a term that is applied to the Medieval and Renaissance martial arts practiced by German masters and their students from the 13th to the 16th centuries. Within the Kunst des Fechtens styles of Germany we practice the robust and efficient system of the Johannes Liechtenauer Tradition.

Why the longsword?

The longsword isn't the only weapon of the Historical European Martial Arts, but its utility both on the battlefield and outside of it gave it pride of place. It is the predominant tool for teaching the principles of Liechtenauer's tradition and at Iron Crown the Longsword, in addition to grappling, is where all novices begin their HEMA journey.
