Glen of Imaal and Lugnaquilla, County Wicklow
In this virtual tour you'll have opportunity to 'walk' along a moraine ridge in the Glen of Imaal. Look for the glacial meltwater indicators nearby! You'll then move up slope and take in the Glen from the slopes of Lugnaquilla, the highest mountain in Ireland outside Kerry. Watch for notable geomorphology along the mountain trail, including downslope wasting and tors.
This tour pairs well with a visit to Slieve Carr to contrast valley and corrie glaciation, and with Ticknock to examine questions surrounding tors and cold-based ice sheets.
Funding for surficial mapping and dating of glacial sediments at the Glen of Imaal was provided by the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI).
