Ticknock, Wicklow Mountains
Glaciers are highly efficient agents of erosion and deposition, but the degree to which glaciers are capable of affecting landscapes is dependent on the characteristics of the glacier itself. Whether a glacier is thick or thin, cold or wet-based, or is constrained by topography impacts the ultimate potential for erosion and deposition alike.
In this virtual tour, you will explore Ticknock in the northern Wicklow Mountains and investigate geomorphic signals of past glaciation in order to assess the type and extent of glaciation here during the last ice age.
If you'd like to learn more about the Ticknock area and trail system, be sure to visit the Ticknock and Kilmashogue pages at the Dublin Mountains Partnership website. You'll also find information on the Neolithic Cairn included in the tour.
Included with this tour stop are third-level curricular materials focused on glacial erosion, landscape preservation, and glacial sediment deposition. [There are two activities, one aimed at more introductory level physical geography/sedimentology students and one at advanced-level student in glacial sedimentology. Both include a list of resources, including suggested reading.]
