My name is Iria (pronounced /iria/); de-Dios and Flores are my surnames.
I am a psycholinguist with a strong interest in computational linguistics and machine learning. I currently serve as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Translation and Language Sciences at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, where I am a member of the Computational Linguistics and Linguistic Theory research group.
I joined UPF in 2024 as a Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral researcher under the guidance of Gemma Boleda. From 2021 to 2023, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Research in Intelligent Technologies at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC), where I contributed to the development of language-centric AI tools (mainly LLMs) for Galician within the Nós Project, led by Paulo Gamallo (USC–CiTIUS). Previously, I was affiliated with the Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language and the Department of English and German at USC, where I earned my PhD in 2021 under the supervision of Carlos Acuña-Fariña (USC) and Manuel Carreiras (BCBL). Between 2014 and 2024, I was also a member of the research unit Cognitive Processes and Behavior.
My basic research is concerned with sentence processing, eye-tracking during reading, linguistic dependencies, and the relationship between grammatical representations and parsing mechanisms. More recently, I got deeply interested in the connections between cognitive and computational science of language and, more specifically, in understanding and leveraging the linguistic capabilities of artificial language models. My applied research is concerned with the creation and enhancement of language models in low-resource scenarios, with a particular emphasis on Galician, my native language. This involves the design of experiments testing different modeling strategies, the curation of textual resources to train these models, and the creation of evaluation materials and procedures. I hope that this research not only contributes to the preservation and digital advancement of under-resourced languages, but that it also enhances the overall inclusivity and diversity of AI applications.
Besides the scientific and technological questions that occupy my mind, I'm an organization geek. I have extensive experience (and I really enjoy) participating in teamwork coordination activities.
