MAKTAB MAHMUD ALOR SETAR (MMAS)
Maktab Mahmud was established on June 19, 1936, by DYMM Tunku Mahmud ibni Almarhum Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Mukarramul Shah as a center for Islamic education and the Arabic language, aiming to produce religious scholars. The institution was designed to be on par with English schools of that era, adopting the Egyptian (Al-Azhar) education system. It was governed by an advisory committee appointed with the consent of the Sultan of Kedah, with the chief minister as chairman and the principal as secretary.
Maktab Mahmud played a crucial role in the fight against the Malayan Union when the Persatuan Ulama Kedah (Kedah Ulama Association) was founded on February 9, 1946, uniting religious scholars to oppose British plans. The institution is fully funded by the State Government of Kedah and remains under the patronage of the Sultan. The State Government of Kedah demonstrated its commitment to Islamic education by expanding 12 branches of Maktab Mahmud across the state, ensuring wider access to quality religious education.
One significant figure, Haji Wan Idris, was initially denied admission as Maktab Mahmud only accepted students from Kedah. Determined, he personally wrote a letter to the Sultan of Kedah. His request was granted, and the admission criteria were revised, allowing students from outside Kedah to enroll. This change provided more opportunities for students beyond the state to receive quality Islamic education at Maktab Mahmud.
VISION:
To establish Maktab Mahmud Alor Setar as a leading Islamic-based secondary education institution in Malaysia.
MISSION:
To develop students who excel holistically physically, emotionally, spiritually, intellectually and socially through a systematic and integrated approach based on Islamic principles, contributing to the advancement of religion, nation, and society through quality education.
