Based on information provided in the abstract submission form and the participant confirmation form we will be awarding early-career support. This support, based on need, will be at one of two levels: covering the cost of the registration; covering the cost of registration AND five nights of accommodations in a shared suite (see below). Unfortunately we are not able to support all other transportation costs (i.e. airfare) nor all participants who requested support.
In the same email with the link to the registration form, participants will be notified if they are awarded early-career support.
Based on the travel details provided by folks requesting shuttle transfer between Rochester and Winona, we have scheduled the following shuttle times and assigned folks to the closest shuttle time. The shuttles will be Winona State University Vehicles, so look for that name on the vehicle and/or a large purple “W” logo. Both of the pick-up locations (the Groome Office and Park & Ride or Rochester MN Airport) are small enough so that by gathering just outside the entrance you will be able to find the pick-up vehicle just fine.
Arrival (June 10th)
There are three airports within easy access to Winona:
Rochester International Airport (RST): Located ~50 minutes from Winona, this is our recommended airport as the workshop will provide transportation to and from RST at the beginning and end of the workshop. RST offers connections Minneapolis (MSP) and Chicago (ORD) on Delta and America Airlines. Rental cars are available as well as a limited shuttle service to Winona by Groome Transportation.
Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport (MSP): Located ~2 hours from Winona, MSP is serviced by most major airlines and a number of discount airlines (e.g. Sun Country, Southwest, Frontier). Rental cars are available as well as a limited shuttle service to Winona by Groome Transportation (see below). If you wish to take partial advantage of the conference provided transportation, Groome offers regular shuttle service between MSP and their Park&Ride Office in Rochester, MN. In addition to RST the workshop will provide transportation between Winona the the Groome Park&Ride Office in Rochester, MN.
Lacrosse Regional Airport (LSE): Located ~40 mins from Winona, LSE offers it is serviced by most major airlines and a number of discount airlines (e.g. Sun Country, Southwest, Frontier). Rental cars & Rideshare are available as well as a limited shuttle service to Winona by Groome Transportation (see below).
Arriving/Departing from Rochester International Airport (RST): The workshop will provide transportation from RST to Winona, MN on Monday, June 9th (the day before the workshop) and from Winona to RST on the evening of Friday, June 13th and Saturday, June 14th (as needed). Closer to the workshop we will ask participants to provide their arrival and departure times so we can schedule transportation. Other options:
Rental Car
Arriving/Departing from Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport (MSP): If you travel through MSP it is recommended that you take a Groome Transportation Shuttle between MSP and their Park&Ride Office in Rochester, MN ($39 dollars one way) and then take the workshop provided transportation between Rochester and Winona, MN. Closer to the workshop we will ask participants to provide their arrival/departure times so we can appropriately schedule the transportation. Other options included:
Groome Transportation: For $63 dollars one-way, there is shuttle service all the way from MSP to Winona. However, there are only 4 -5 trips daily and you will transfer through Rochester anyway. shuttles from Winona (include the Winona State Campus) to MSP. The arrival and departure times are limited
Rental Car: The drive between MSP and Winona, MN is mostly through the Mississippi River Valley and quite picturesque.
Arriving/ Departing Lacrosse Regional Airport (LSE):
Rideshare & Taxi's are available, though it may be difficult to get one to take you all the way to Winona.
Rental Car
Train: The Winona Amtrak station is located right next to Winona State University's campus, ~0.5 km from our on-campus accommodations, Haake Hall. Amtrak offers two eastbound (from Minneapolis) and two westbound (from Chicago) daily. Note that while it is technically feasible to fly into MSP and then take the Amtrak it Winona, it isn't recommended since you would need to travel from MSP to the St. Paul Union Station to catch the train. If however you are spending time in Minneapolis/St. Paul before or after the meeting, this could be a fine option for getting to or from Winona.
Bus: Jefferson Bus lines provides daily service to/from Winona and distnations like Rochester, Minneapolis, etc. Through transfing with Greyhound buses can be taken to/from most of the country.

When arriving in the US from an most international locations you will need to pass through customs and immigration at the first stop in the US. If you have a direct flight to MSP, then you would go through immigration there. If instead if you had a lay-over in say Detroit you would pass through immigration and customs in Detroit before your next flight to MSP. When going through immigration and customs you will have your passport checked, but you will also collect you luggage for customs, then you will most likely have to pass through security screening again before getting your next flight. This process typically takes no more than 1-hr, but could take longer. It is recommended to have at least a 2-hour layover at the airport where you will go through customs and immegration.
For those needing a VISA to travel to the USA, a letter of invitation can be provided. Please email IR.FSLWorkshop@gmail.com
