1) arts & crafts < Fashioning and teaching arts & crafts have been a hobby and vocation throughout my life (including 10 years teaching candle making to Kibbutz Gezer's children).

This work enabled familiarity with different materials such as leather, wax, precious and ordinary metals, glass, clay,stone and more.

2a) soft leather < I realized in 1982 that the abstract metal, stone and leather jewelry were miniature sculptures.

I concluded working, as a Texas social worker with abused children, and devoted full time to art.

2b) soft leather < The first works were soft leather sensually molded over rigid wood and stiff geometric leather forms. Isn’t all creation and all art sensual?

Realizing this hemisphere was my first sulpture, I worked on it all night. I finished in time to watch the sunrise before going to work.

2c) soft leather < Gallery visitors were invited to rearrange later works made from several sections of soft pliable leather. Thus the sculptures were an ever changing collaboration between visitor and artist. Every person is an artist. 3) first paintings < Coming to Israel in the mid 80’s I was awarded a government artist’s stipend, and joined the Association of Kibbutz Artists. Though continuing with leather sculpting, the main focus shifted to painting.

The first paintings, like the first leather sculptures, were geometric, fashioned from painted panels joined to make geometric sculptures. Red, blue and yellow, the primary colors, carried the weight of the design. Black and white connected various elements.

4) triptychs < Years of flat paneled triptychs were soon added, in the late 80s, to the painted sculptures.

The 3 primary colors always urgently reaching across the 3 panels, black or white straining to bring them together.

When asked when I would use additional colors, I replied, “When I consume what I need from red, blue and yellow”.

5) single panel < With the beginning of the new decade, the triptychs merged into large or small single paneled paintings.

They were abstract, as well as abstract expressionism, sometimes with simple black lines on a colored background, or black lines on white.

Sometimes a few colors were added, very few. Inspiration came from the human form and from landscapes.

6) paint's structure < During the same period, I became interested in paint's structural qualities.

Relief paintings and mobiles were made without substructures.

Thicker layers of paint were applied regularly.

7) found art < During the last months of 2021 the world yielded “found-paint”. “World” rather than “nature” as the world includes computers and smog as well as trees and animals. These monochromatic relief works at times involved mounting found-paint as it was found.

Other times the found-paint was in strips, sheets or chunks that were manipulated as desired. Paint only; without substructures.

The final piece of this series, in December 2021, was primarily yellow found-paint mounted on a yellow background. Towards the end I decided to add small pieces of red and blue. It felt like coming home.

I instituted Poetry from Bar-Ilan, a program for Bar-Ilan's poets to read their works in public venues. It began in 2002, and I continued producing the annual program for over 10 years.

9) photography < Canaanite Stone with Woman was part of Tel Gezer, a group exhibition seen around Israel. It combined the warm female form with rounded, but cold stone.

The photomontage contains several Canaanite Commemorative Stones and one wall segment, in the upper left photo. The wall was built during the Solomonic period from ashlar blocks.
Two mail art poster projects: Artists' names and addresses on back
10) mail art < Mail art, also by internet, is an egalitarian way of circumventing official art distribution and approval systems. It developed out of Ray Johnson's New York Correspondence School and the Fluxus movements of the 1960s.
Today it's a global movement.
Three projects on internet, discs, & books: S:L:K (Scents: Locks: Kisses)
Different mail art networked projects are displayed and archived in print, museums, galleries and digital formats. I have contributed to several projects in Europe and America, mostly Italy and Belgium. One project, S: L: K, with Belgium’s Netland TAC-42.292, had over 800 participating artists.

Ira Director is a veteran artist who has made his way as an autodidact in the art world and its language. As a child he visited many museums in New York and Chicago until Eureka, he understood the value and qualities of abstract art.
The paintings are done with careful thought and, at times, long term planning, from the expressive color sprays to the restrained and free application of paint. Then a virtuosic emotional explosion creates a harmonious yet impulsive look.
"I started my artistic work in sculpture and abstract painting, and not in representational art for a very simple reason. I never went to art school.
I started designing and producing simple useful items. The designs were abstract, but each item was simple and useful. In the end, the piece followed the design. And the rest you know.

Is there a doctor here?
trite? perhaps? but universal and necessary
the white haired woman’s pale face turned red
she simply fell over
dropped from the chair
the poet stopped mid poem
her husband knelt in the hot sun crying
as people moved closer
I had the good sense to move away
and get another piece of the apple cake
which I cut horizontally to get a slice
filled with apple pieces after loading
it with homemade “tehena” I took two bites
“lucky I’ve already read”
embarrassed by my own thoughts
I phoned Debbie “How terrible. Have you read yet?”
I stuffed the rest in my mouth
licked my drippy fingers
chewed slowly as I went back
hoping no one would notice
a doctor was administering CPR
a young teen was crying in the john
perhaps the old woman’s granddaughter
“she wasn’t even wearing a hat” I heard
The poets had started reading again
later in the shade I brought her an orange
and thought
as the ambulance drove away
staying alive is mostly luck
what if that doctor
hadn’t wanted to hear
student poetry that day
over coffee
I realized
I was likely
the only other person
who “knew” CPR
so the old lady
had two chances today
though the doctor probably
also saved me
from finishing this day
with a pair of dead lips
pressed to mine

א) אומנויות ואומנות < אופנה והוראת
אומנויות ומלאכות היו תחביב ויעוד לאורך חיי (כולל 10 שנים ללמד את ילדי גזר ייצור נרות). עבודה זו אפשרה היכרות עם חומרים שונים כגון עור, שעווה, מתכות יקרות/רגילות , זכוכית, חימר, אבן ועוד. מיומנויות אלו היו חיוניות ליצירת יצירות אמנות עתידיות.
ב,א) עור רך < כשהבנתי ב-1982 שתכשיטי המתכת, האבן והעור המופשטים שלי הם פסלים מיניאטוריים, סיימתי לעבוד כעובד סוציאלי בטקסס עם ילדים שעברו התעללות, והקדשתי זמן מלא לאמנות.
ב,ב) עור רך < העבודות הראשונות היו עור רך שעוצב בחושניות על עץ קשיח וצורות עור גיאומטריות נוקשות. האם כל יצירה וכל אמנות אינן חושניות?
ב,ג) עור רך < מבקרי הגלריה הוזמנו לסדר מחדש יצירות מאוחרות יותר שנעשו מכמה חלקים של עור רך גמיש. לפיכך, הפסלים היו שיתוף פעולה משתנה תדיר בין המבקר לאמן. כל אדם הוא אמן. חלקם מחפשים את המומחיות היצירתית שלהם; חלק מוצאים את זה. מלאים//כולם/מתמלאים/ביצירתיות/רק להציץ פנימה/ולראות
ג) ציורים ראשונים < הגעתי לישראל באמצע שנות ה-80 קיבלתי מלגת אמן ממשלתית, והצטרפתי לאגודת אמני הקיבוץ. למרות שהמשיכו בפיסול עור, הפוקוס העיקרי עבר לציור. הציורים הראשונים, כמו פסלי העור הראשונים, היו גיאומטריים, נוצרו מלוחות מצוירים שחוברו ליצירת פסלים גיאומטריים. אדום, כחול וצהוב, צבעי היסוד, נשאו את משקל העיצוב. שחור ולבן חיברו אלמנטים שונים.
ד) טריפטיכים < טריפטיכים שטוחים נוספו עד מהרה בסוף שנות ה-80, לפסלים המצוירים. שלושת צבעי היסוד מגיעים בדחיפות על פני שלושת הלוחות. זן שחור או לבן כדי להפגיש ביניהם. כששאלתי מתי אשתמש בצבעים נוספים, השבתי, "כשאני צורך את מה שאני צריך מאדום, כחול וצהוב".
ה) ציורי לוח בודד < עם תחילת העשור החדש התמזגו הטריפטיכים לציורי לוח בודדים גדולים או קטנים. הם היו מופשטים, כמו גם אקספרסיוניזם מופשט, לפעמים עם קווים שחורים פשוטים על רקע צבעוני, או קווים שחורים על לבן. לפעמים נוספו כמה צבעים, מעט מאוד. ההשראה הגיעה מצורת האדם ומנופים.
ו) איכויות מבניות של צבע < באותה תקופה התעניינתי בסגולות המבניות של הצבע. ציורי תבליט ומוביילים נעשו ללא תשתיות. שכבות צבע עבות יותר יושמו באופן קבוע.
ז) מצא אמנות < במהלך החודשים האחרונים של 2021 העולם הניב "צבע-מצא". "עולם" ולא "טבע" שכן העולם כולל מחשבים וערפיח וכן עצים ובעלי חיים. עבודות תבליט מונוכרומטיות אלו כללו לעיתים הרכבה של צבע שנמצא כפי שהוא נמצא. בפעמים אחרות הצבע המצוי היה ברצועות, יריעות או נתחים שנעשו בהם מניפולציות לפי הרצון. צבע בלבד; ללא תשתיות. היצירה האחרונה בסדרה זו, בדצמבר 2021, הייתה בעיקרה צבע צהוב שנמצא על רקע צהוב. לקראת הסוף החלטתי להוסיף חתיכות קטנות של אדום וכחול. זה הרגיש כמו לחזור הביתה.
ח) שירה < אני בעל תואר ראשון בפילוסופיה ותואר שני בספרות ושירה אנגלית עם שירים שפורסמו בכתבי עת ובזינים אלקטרוניים. גם שירים וציורים משולבים, כששניהם חלק בלתי נפרד מהיצירות. בשנת 2002 הקמתי את "שירה מבר-אילן", תכנית למשוררי בר-אילן לקריאה ביצירותיהם במקומות ציבוריים, והפקתי את התכנית השנתית כבר למעלה מ-10 שנים.
ט) צילום < אבן הנצחה כנענית ואישה היה חלק מ"תל גזר", תערוכה קבוצתית, שנדדה ברחבי ישראל. שילבתי את הצורה הנשית החמה עם אבן קרה.
י) אמנות דואר < דואר אמנות, גם דרך האינטרנט, היא דרך שוויונית לעקוף מערכות הפצה ואישור אמנות רשמיות. זה התפתח מבית הספר להתכתבות בניו יורק של ריי ג'ונסון ומתנועות הפלוקסוס של שנות ה-60.
היום זו תנועה עולמית.
פרויקטים שונים ברשת דואר מוצגים ומאוחסנים בארכיון: נעשה שימוש בדפוס, מוזיאונים, גלריות ודיגיטל. תרמתי לכמה פרויקטים באירופה ובאמריקה, בעיקר באיטליה ובבלגיה. בפרויקט אחד, S: L: K, עם Netland TAC-42.292 של בלגיה, השתתפו למעלה מ-800 אמנים.

food court
saw the duffel bags
as I neared the pillars
knew they belonged to
the soldiers
soldiers
teens dressed up
like soldiers
munching teen food
as if, as if
I turned, felt foolish
hesitated then
two words
“thank you”
smiles, nods
I put a 100
on the table
“buy some desserts”
‘’we can't take that”
walked away
a tap on my shoulder
smiles

Only A Moment
I noticed you
stretching
white
to the morning
and as I watched
and let it pass
I brought it back
for moments
are all we have:
I
watched
you
stretch
white
to the
morning
Especially in the Morning
I think of you often
and miss you always
My body stirs
in the first soft light
Slowly –
a lonely bird song
becomes a symphony
My eyes still closed
I turn to hold you
But…
About The Moment
I could tell you in fine detail
about his sharp features
and short brown hair
or hers strawberry
and the freckles
spreading from her nose
over her cheeks.
But this poem
is only about
the moment.
The moment
after we passed the car
parked on the shoulder
as the mother
held her young son
and let him pee
into the weeds.
That's the moment:
the brown
and strawberry couple
looked at each other
and smiled.
It was that moment
so filled with wishes
dreams and hope
that this poem is about.
