The term IPTV is the acronym of an English term "Internet Protocol Television". It refers to a mode of consumption of television, which is done via the Internet protocol, as opposed to terrestrial or satellite television. In France, it mainly concerns programs broadcast via Internet boxes (Orange, Bouygues Telecom, SFR...), in catch-up or on demand. IPTV is therefore only a technology that allows to broadcast content. It is not technically illegal. It is the use that is made of this technology that can be illegal.
The use of IPTV becomes illegal as soon as it gives you access to content broadcasted by actors who do not have the rights related to this content. The latter offer to send a box to individuals, via a network of ambassadors who go door to door or, more and more often, from forums, for a certain amount of money, which usually varies from 100 to 150 euros, which will give them access to a whole series of movie, sports and other channels. Once the transaction is completed, the manufacturer registers your box in the list of boxes authorized to play the content it broadcasts. The process is obviously illegal, as the box manufacturer does not have the appropriate rights.
The choice of the box is crucial, to enjoy the best possible experience. The parameters to take into account are the RAM, which will allow the smoothest possible broadcasting when it is good. It is therefore recommended to choose a box with at least 2GB of RAM. The other criterion is the operating system of the box, the OS. You should choose the most recent one possible and update it as you go along so that the experience is never degraded. Finally, take a look at the standard of your HDMI port, to see if it is full HD or ultra HD. Bluetooth is also an important point, if you want to connect your box to a compatible speaker, to boost the sound.
It's all a question of trade-off between price and the content you're given access to. If you are a fan of series and movies, look at Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, OCS or Canal+. If you're interested in sports, then Canal+ Sport, Eurosport or Bein Sport are the best choices.
E-commerce sites such as Amazon, Cdiscount, Aliexpress or Fnac - Darty give you access to a whole range of IPTV boxes whose price generally varies between 50 and 100 euros.
VOD streaming is exactly what it sounds like; you get video whenever you request it. Movie streaming sites are VOD providers. There is no time limit on what you can watch (other than what the service currently has the rights to).
You tell the service what you want to watch, they send it to you over the internet and you watch it. Simple.
With a service like Netflix or Amazon Prime video, you select a TV show or movie you want to watch from a wide range. They work on a subscription basis, there are also services where you pay per content consumed
If you have watched "catch-up TV", you are familiar with this type of IPTV. Many broadcast networks now allow users to watch programs they missed when they were broadcast.
The important difference between time-shifted media and video-on-demand is that shared content has a limited shelf life. You can't go back and watch an episode of a show you missed years ago.
You watch regular, scheduled shows at a time that is convenient for you.
Video-on-demand and deferred media are very similar. The difference is mostly in the length of time you can watch a program after it has aired.
The third type of IPTV is live TV broadcasts over the Internet while they are being watched, i.e. live IPTV or IP simulcast. So, just like broadcast TV, you can also watch live shows on IPTV. Many people watch sporting events this way; it's easy to stream a game on your phone when you're on the go.
Sports seem to be the area of television that has been the fastest to be adopted by IPTV. There are many subscription sports packages (beIN or Eleven Sport for Belgium) that you can watch from your computer or stream to your TV whenever you want.
Live IPTV is similar to regular TV for the consumer.
