Name: Shawn Timothy School: Metea Valley High School Title: Summer and Winter

Most people believe that they matter because of the people they love or the people who love them. In my poem, the man on the ledge has no more family, and thus believes he no longer matters. The woman reminds him to take his life day by day and that bad seasons in life will pass. I believe that I matter because I remind people around me that they are loved, even if they don’t feel like it.

SPECIAL ARTIST (High School)

Name: Sanya Kapoor School: Metea Valley High School Title: Poem- "I Am From Poem"

This poem i wrote as one of my ELA assignment, inspired by my teacher peice of creation. This peom shares my connection with my family members and the Country i belong. It says what kind of person "I" want to be... I think through these few lines anyone can understand how my family support and help me overcoming my physical challenges and soaring high to reach my goals. This is related to the theme, as it shows the luv and care "I" get from my family which make me fortunate and proud. What else could be more important for anyone else, besides their family luv......."It matter alot"

Name: Michelle Azie School: Metea Valley High School Title: Talking to the Mirror

This piece was a manipulation of art in textual form. I don't matter because of what I have done, but that I survived today. That through my brokenness and joy and failures and successes I am still here. I felt this piece was the unseen me (without living life’s formula). Even as a younger child I wondered about this reality that I see everybody but me the moment I wake up. Without a mirror, the only parts of me that I see are the rest of my body and what unfolds in my life.

Name: Manasa Boppudi School: Neuqua Valley High School Title: Knowledge Is Power

Racism is something that has affected me for most of my life. The stereotypes that marked me and how others treated me, made me not believe in myself and caused me to degrade myself even further. As I learned more about racism and stopped my ignorant, naive nature, I started to believe in myself and my ability to make a difference, and ultimately, just matter.

Name: Sofia Solorzano School: Waubonsie Valley High School Title: Living for My Own Life

My poem relates to the theme because it's a piece that's based off part of my life and the difficulties I've faced as trying to be a normal girl, even though my life has never been the same since. I try to tell that part of my life because I feel that it's the part of me that has always struggled, but I've also tried to find ways to cope and deal with it. Lastly, I wrote the poem to show people that this was my only way to express all that's been held inside me.

Name: Jenna Duncan School: Neuqua Valley High School Title: Someday

This poem is about how the world is constantly changing, but it is up to individuals to make the world a better and brighter place. The theme of "I Matter Because..." is woven throughout the piece, and I reflect on how my voice can create change. Every person's voice matters, and collectively can make the changes necessary to solve the longstanding issues we are faced with.

Name: Mereum Fernando School: Metea Valley High School Title: An Argumentative Essay: to Calculate the Matter of a Person

I believe that the matter or significance of a person cannot be specifically defined or explained away. My essay is a testament to that because I, or any other person, does not need to justify their relevance. To do so, is to quantify the aspects of a person. This is impossible because what makes a person, a person, or a human,a human, is intangible. To quantify and justify the qualities or the degree of humanity of a human is unfeasible. Rather, I matter for the fact that I am me. I am a person, I exist, I matter, period.

Name: Joanne Tayaban School: Waubonsie Valley High School Title: I Don't Know

We often believe that it's necessary for us to have our entire lives planned out, even if we're just kids or teenagers. We look at other people and envy them for appearing put together, when in reality, we're all searching for our own paths. I think that even in times of self doubt, it's important to remember that we all matter, and we shouldn't let society define who we are. We are the people who get to shape our own paths.

Name: Aubrey Thomas School: Granger Middle School Title: I Matter Now and Forever

My literature relates to this theme because I and other people of my race haven't been heard this year. I say this because we've always been treated differently but, this year it really showed me how it really feels like to be an African American person in America. When you read this you will hear my example of things that opened my eye to how I am treated differently in the world. Lastly, I tell you why black lives matter and my life matters.

Name: Kartika Kalyani Palani School: Still Middle School Title: Him & Me

My main character is doubting that he matters when his beloved pet frog died, and his classmate starts bullying him for being sad about it. This relates to the theme because lots of people doubt that they matter, especially in this pandemic where people are being locked in their homes. This story shows that no one should doubt that they matter, and that they matter simply because they are themselves, and that is enough.

Name: Rajeshwari Jana School: Scullen Middle School Title: Good Enough

I wrote about how I'm not good enough. I realized the reason I'm not good enough is because I don't believe I am. This realization drives me to win a fight. The fight I win shows me I only need to be good enough for myself. Your opinion about yourself is stronger than any other. This relates to the theme because I display that I matter because I matter to myself. Thinking I am good enough is a strong part of whether I matter to myself or not. Mattering to yourself is all you need to matter at all.

Name: Hooriya Siddiqui School: Hill Middle School Title: Orphans Matter

My short story Orphans matter was inspired by a person I met, and she was adopted. My twisted, page turning story is about orphans and the communities negativity pushing them down. The orphans get pushed down soo much, that they forget themself. They forget who they really are, and why they are here in the world. Even though my story takes place in Lubbock, Texas it applies to communities not only in United States, but all around the world.

Name: Rachel Chen School: Still Middle School Title: We All Matter

My work is about two different sides/perspectives on a topic. One perspective says that they don't matter and that they don't belong on this world. The other perspective contradicts that and says that everyone matters because everyone has a purpose and something they will accomplish. It relates to the theme because it is about the reasons that we all matter. I chose poetry because I thought that it would be the most powerful style at conveying my message.

My story is about a family during WW2 that is taken to a concentration camp and has to risk their own lives in order for their son to escape. This relates to the theme of "I matter because" because it tells how the parents of the boy who escapes and another family that helped him to escape are important to him because he wouldn't be living without them. This shows how his family is important to him just like my family is important to me.

Every child is unique, they should not be compared and contrasted with other kids. Every child matters because they are one of a kind, unique - they can do a set of things that others cannot. They should be allowed to develop their goldmine of skills and personality. Forcing a child to wear certain things, behave in a certain way, and making them learn something that they don’t want to, will not be beneficial for them, they will not matter anymore because they are like others, not unique anymore. That is what I have tried to convey in this poem.
