Check online for tutorials on how best to replace your own device's display before starting anything so that you're better prepared when working on yours.
Backup your data.
If you have a phone that comes with an SD card, it's a good idea to transfer all of the files on your computer to that card so that they're backed up in case something happens to the phone itself.
Don't forget about apps. Some apps may not be able to be downloaded again if something goes wrong with them, so make sure they're backed up as well!

If your device is stuck on the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try doing a forced restart.
Press and hold the Home button and Sleep/Wake button at the same time for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
