Human Factors SIG Meeting (September 2024)
This very special meeting of our Human Factors Special Interest Group was chaired by Advanced Paramedic, Shane Devlin who welcomed highly regarded experts in the field, Dr Paul O’Connor and Dr Stephen Hearns to IPERN.
Dr Paul O'Connor is a Personal Professor in the School of Medicine and Human Factors Psychologist. His research is concerned with improving human performance and safety in high risk work environments. He has carried out research in a wide range of high risk industries (e.g. civil aviation, offshore oil production), and the military (e.g. aviation, special forces). Most recently he has been carrying out research in healthcare with the aim of improving patient safety and quality of care through addressing the human factors that contribute to poor performance.
Dr Stephen Hearns is a Consultant with Scotland’s Emergency Medical Retrieval Service. Stephen led the team establishing the Diploma in retrieval and transfer medicine for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and he is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the University of Glasgow. Stephen’s book ‘Peak Performance Under Pressure’ was published in 2019, where he draws on over 20 years of experience in high pressure situations to give an insight into ways to reach and maintain optimal levels of performance and how to regain composure and situational awareness under pressure.

On her first tour of duty with the United Nations Nicole demonstrated great strength and ability and conducted herself in a manner of outstanding professionalism. The award was presented to Nicole at the ceremony by Dara’s sister, Emer Fitzpatrick.
A Special Recognition Award was also presented on the day to the family of Caitríona Lucas.
