Here I give another example of how to create a face using discrete shapes. I call it Woodblock because it reminds me of woodblock prints made from carved shapes. I used SketchClub's Vector tool to create the shapes. I used iColorama to give the result a 3D feel.
I started with this photo from the Sktchy app.
I opened the photo in SketchClub and stretched it to fill the canvas. I reduced the opacity of the photo layer, because I'll just be using it as a guide. I created a new layer above the photo layer. Make sure Freehand is selected from the menu that you get to by touching the "squiggle" icon at the top middle of the screen, and Mirror says "none" (also under the squiggle icon). I chose Brush from the tools menu (touch the left-most icon at the top middle of the screen to get to the tools menu). Under brush settings (under the icon at the top middle of the screen that looks like 3 sliders), I chose different brushes for the different parts of the image and painted some hair, her mouth, her eyebrows, and her shirt. With the color picker (the colored square at the top middle of the screen) I selected colors similar to the corresponding areas of the photo.
On the same layer, I now made the eyeballs. Choose the Select tool from the tools menu. Under the squiggle icon at the top of the screen, chose the Circle shape. Drag your stylus from the center of the circle you want to create, and make a circle shape for the first eye. Then under the sliders icon at the top of the screen, choose Add. Now draw a circle for the other eye. Now choose Fill from the tools menu. Choose black from the color picker. Touch inside one of the circles. This will fill the two circles with black. Now go through the same process to create two blue circles inside the two black circles. Now go through the same process to create two smaller black circles inside the two blue circles. Next I used the Vector tool to paint shapes for the whites of her eyes.
Now for the eyelashes. Choose the Vector tool from the tools menu. Choose black from the color picker. Make tiny triangular shapes all around the shapes that represent the eyes.
This image shows the result so far with visibility for the photo layer turned off.
On a new layer, I selected Brush from the tools menu, and I used various brushes to add yellow paint to her hair, and a light patch to her mouth. Then I selected Vector from the tools menu, and I painted shapes for her cheeks, nose and neck, using the color picker to choose colors related to those in the photo. I positioned this layer above the other layers. This image shows the result so far with visibility for the photo layer turned off.
I added another new layer. I selected Brush from the tools menu, and I selected a large soft brush to paint skin tones onto her face. I dragged this layer to be positioned below the hair layer.
I created another new layer. I selected light blue from the color picker. I chose the Fill tool from the tools menu and touched the screen to fill the layer with the color. Then I dragged the layer below the face layer me below the skin tone layer but above the photo layer.
I created another new layer. I used a large soft brush to paint skin tones onto her neck. I reduced the opacity of the layer. This was to soften the triangles I had painted earlier for her neck.
Now I went back to the hair layer, and I painted some light and dark lines into the hair.
On a new layer at the top of the layer stack, I used the Vector tool to paint her a new mouth. I selected Brush from the tools menu, and I chose a thick hard-edged brush to repaint her eyebrows. I saved to my camera roll.
I opened the image in iColorama. I used Form/Crop to crop.
I made some color adjustments using Tone. Then I used Style/Flat Preset 18 at medium opacity, trying all the sliders. This produced a 3D effect. I used Effect/Raise to emphasize the edges.
I used Preset/Border to create a border with a color that matches a color in the image.
I used Effect/Blend to blend with another version of the image, to clean up her neck area. I used a brush mask to confine the blend to her neck area.
As a finishing touch, I used the Elasticam app to alter the shape of her face and neck.
