I liked the look of this old man. I tried to enhance the soulful mood by adding texture, color, and depth, and bringing out the eyes.
I started with this photo from Pixabay, a source of copyright-free images. I like soulful look of him, hence the name of this piece.
In iColorama, I used Style/Coherence to smooth the face.
FraxHD is a fun program. The free version is easy to use. You can look at different fractals and "fly" over them to find an interesting pattern, which you can then save and reuse. Here is one that I will use for texture in this image.
In iColorama, I used Style/Sketch preset 4, using the fractal image as the input photo (touch the Photo button at the bottom of the screen).
I used Adjust/Levels to increase contrast, by moving the Min Input slider slightly to the right, and using a brush mask to protect the lighter areas of the skin.
I used Tone/Tint or Tone/Pastel to add a tint of color.
I used Adjust/Levels to increase contrast.
I used the gamma slider in Adjust/Levels and an inverted brush mask to brighten the eyes. Then, with the brush mask still in place, I applied Tone/B&W at low opacity to the eyes, to reduce saturation that happened during the brightening step.
In Tone/Tint, using an inverted brush mask, I applied a tint to the eyeballs.
Using Tone, I selectively tinted different areas of the image with different colors and lightnesses, using a different brush mask for each step.
Sharpened the eyes using Effect/Sharpen. Using Preset/Borders, I added a bit of vignetting. This is Version 1.
Now I'll make another version. Again I used Style/Sketch preset 4, this time using one of the kernel presets.
Using Effect/Blend I blended back a bit of the pre-Sketch image.
I used Tone/Pastel to add color. I lightened the eyes using Adjust/Levels and an inverted brush mask.
I changed the eye color using Tone/Tint and an inverted brush mask.
I un-inverted the brush mask (touch "invert" on the brush mask bar) and applied Tone/Tint or Tone/Pastel to the rest of the image.
I used several Effect/Denoise presets to smooth the image in preparation for Raise. Then I applied a touch of Effect/Raise.
I used FormWarp and also the Elasticam app on areas of the face for some subtle changes of expression.
