I continue to explore how to simplify an image by blending two versions: one mostly color, and the other mostly lines. Here I compare two different ways of making edges and their impact on the final image.
I started with this photo from Pixabay, a source of copyright-free images. I like her big hair, wistful expression, and interesting pose.
In iColorama, I applied Adjust/Tonelab preset 4 at partial opacity, for clarity and depth.
I applied Style/Flow to smooth her face and hair.
To make the "mostly color" version, I used Style/Water preset 9.
Then I applied Style/Water preset 1. The effect is subtle and could be skipped. Every image is different, so it is good to experiment with different simplification methods.
For the "mostly lines" version, I used Style/ET-Flow. It gives thick lines that look great for her hair.
In Effect/Blend, I blended the ET-Flow edges over the woman. Then I applied a touch of Adjust/Tonelab and Adjust/Levels for depth and contrast.
For another version, here I used Style/Tensor preset 1 after the Style/Water 9 and Style/Water 1 steps.
I used Style/Edges preset 1 (on the Flow image).
In Effect/Blend, I blended the edges over the woman. For finishing touches, I applied a bit of Adust/Tonelab preset 4 and Adjust/Levels.
