As a result of exploring FraxHD, I have a collection of beautiful abstract images. It is always a challenge, however, to find a good way to use them in compositing an image. This fractal brought to mind a planetary surface. I draped the fractal over a sphere to make it look like a planet. To emphasize the planetary feel, I place a moon in the upper left. And I placed some interplanetary fog in the lower right to complete the picture.
FraxHD is a fun program. The free version is easy to use. You can look at different fractals and "fly" over them to find an interesting pattern, which you can then save and reuse. Here is one that I will use to create this Outer Space image.
I brought the FraxHD image into iColorama, and I used Adjust/Exposure and decreased the brightness to zero to get a black canvas. This gave me a black canvas the same size as the fractal image. Now I imported the black canvas into the Matter app, and selected a sphere as the object. I chose the FraxHD image as the style photo. I chose Wrap as the style, and experimented with the size, position, orientation and lighting.
Still in Matter, I added a second sphere, again using the FraxHD image as the style photo. I chose Wrap as the style, and experimented with the size, position, orientation and lighting. It is important that both spheres appear to have the same light source, of some distant sun.
Now I imported the image into iColorama. I used Adjust/Tonelab preset 4 for clarity and depth, and I used Adjust/Levels to improved contrast and lightness.
I used this photo from Pixabay, a source of copyright-free images.
In iColorama, I used Tone/Match to match the color to the composition.
In Effect/Blend, I blended the mist over the smaller planet.
In Effect/Blend, I blended the same mist image onto the foreground of the composition.
I enhanced color in Tone/Enhance.
Finally, I added a touch of Raise for a slight 3D effect.
