Color, shape, and light are the focus of this image. The figure has inverted tones, like a negative, which makes her appear to be lit from above. The lighting in the background reinforces that illusion, and makes it seem as if she is a performer on a lit stage, which is why I titled the piece Limelight.
I started with this image I made previously. You can see how I made it here.
I opened the image in the Metabrush app and on a new layer, in Paint mode, I painted over the image with a large square brush, with partial opacity. In brush settings, I set spacing at the maximum setting, 100% variance for position and rotation, and no structure or shadows.
This is the brush image for the above step, which is from Pixabay, a source of copyright-free images.
In iColorama, using Effect/Blend, I blended the Metabrush image on top of the woman, in Difference blend mode. I experimented with the Opacity and Feature sliders, and the Lightness slider under Set.
I applied adjust/Tonelab preset 4 for tonal separation.
The image is interesting, but contains too many distracting elements. I need to simplify it. There are too many colors. So I used Tone/B&W to make a monotone image. Also, the the "aura" in the background is distracting. I turned the background black using Brush/Paint and a black brush. Here you can see I've painted part of the background. I continued to paint the rest.
I don't want a black and white image, so I used Tone/Tint for some color.
To make the background more interesting, I used a preset in Texture/Leak.
Finally, I used Form/Warp to adjust the mouth.
