I have a collection of lovely abstract images from my experiments with FraxHD. I'm always alert to how I may use them in a composite image. Here I used a fractal image to add a feeling of high-energy flames to this portrait, in iColorama. I made two different versions, which resulted from trying different settings in the blend step.
I started with this photo from Pixabay, a source of copyright-free images. I like the shape of his head and his intense gaze.
In iColorama, I used Style/Flow preset 1 to smooth the face, Adjust/Tonelab preset 4 for clarity and depth, and Adjust/High preset 1 for sharpness and to accentuate highlights. These effects increased the intensity o his expression.
I applied Style/Flat preset 1. This is to simplify the image before applying Style/ET-Flow, which add texture. This Flat preset also turned his eyes into hollow black sockets. This will accentuate the terrifying look of the final image.
I applied Style/ET-Flow, which added some interesting texture to his skin.
FraxHD is a fun program. The free version is easy to use. You can look at different fractals and "fly" over them to find an interesting pattern, which you can then save and reuse. Here is one that I will use for blending over the man. It brings vivid color, energetic lines, and 3D depth to the composite image. I imagine it as flames.
Using Effect/Blend, I blended the FraxHD image on top of the man, trying several blend modes and slider settings, including the Set sliders. Here the use of the gray slider under Set allowed me to cut away some of the "valleys" in the fractal, so you can see through the flames a bit without having to make them transparent.
As finishing touches, I applied Adjust/Levels for contrast, Style/Flow for smoothness to prepare for a Raise step, and Effect/Raise preset 1 to accentuate the 3D effect of the flames. This is Version 1.
Now I'll make another version. This is a different blend of the FraxHD image on top of the man, where I used different settings in the Blend step, above.
In Effect/Blend using an inverted brush mask, I blended a bit of his eyes back in from the original. I applied Style/Flow for a smoothing step in preparation for using Raise, and I applied Effect/Raise preset 1. This is Version 2.
