Here I show you the very basics about how to get started in SketchClub, and where to find all the functionality you will need to start trying it out.
When you open SketchClub, you see your gallery (past projects). Tap on New Sketch, which is the big red rectangle in the upper left corner of the screen.
This screen will come up asking you to choose a canvas size. I generally use a custom size like the one I show here. After you choose your canvas size, tap the bar that says Create.
Now you get to a blank canvas.
Tap the layers icon to see your layers in the layers palette. The layers icon is the left-most icon on the toolbar at the top of the screen. The icon looks like a miniature layer stack. Tap the icon again to hide the layer palette from view. In the layers palette, you choose a layer by touching it. It will be marked in red to indicate that it is the active layer. You can move a layer higher or lower in the stack by touching the three little lines on its left and dragging it where you want it to go. You can change the layer blending mode. You can fill the layer with color. You can change the layer opacity. You can add a new layer by touching the plus sign in the upper right of the layers palette. When you have selected the layer you want to work on, close the layers palette.
This menu is for selecting a tool to use. Tap on a tool name to try drawing with the tool. With some tools, such as Pen or Brush, you’ll first be taken to a second menu to choose the particular kind of pen or brush.
This is the menu of tool settings. Here I show the menu for the Vector tool. I sometimes try different Simplify settings when I use the Vector tool.
Go to the color wheel to choose a color. You can also use the eye dropper at the upper right on the color wheel menu to choose a color that is already in the image you are working with.
You can set tool size and transparency.
In the Actions menu, you can import a photo from your camera roll onto the active layer. This will bring your photo in, and let you resize and reposition it using your fingers to pinch , drag, etc. when you are happy with its position, hit Done. Now if you look at your layers palette, you will see the photo in there. The next thing I would do is move to a higher layer, choose a tool, and start trying it out. For example, try using the Vector tool to make shapes. You should be able to follow my tutorials on how I used SketchClub to make specific artworks, which you can find by typing SketchClub into the search box on this website.
Use the Actions menu when you want to save your work to the camera roll.
