Here I show how you can create eyeballs in iColorama. I use this method in a portrait where the subject was looking down, and I wanted to change her gaze so that she would be looking ahead, level with the viewer.
I started with this photo of mine. I like the photo, but I wanted to create the same image with her eyes open.
First I will tone and crop the image. I applied Adjust/EQ2 for tonal balance and some sharpness. I warmed the color using Tone/Enhance or Tone/Tint at low opacity. I smoothed the image using Style/Coherence and Effect/Denoise smooth preset. I cropped using Form/Crop.
Now to open the eyes. I pushed open the eyes in the Elasticam app. I used the "Hand" tool at low size and low strength. There is an undo arrow at the top left.
I used Adjust/Levels and an inverted brush mask to lighten the whites of the eyes. With the mask still in place, I used Effect/Denoise second preset to smooth out the whites of the eyes. I also show the brush mask I made.
Using Brush/Paint and a hard round brush, I painted in black pupils.
I used Adjust/Levels and an inverted brush mask to paint dark edges around the irises. I removed the mask. Then I used Adjust/Levels and Tone/Tint with an inverted brush mask to first lighten and then apply color to the irises. I show the brush mask I made for the iris edges. Under that, I also show the brush mask I used for lightening and coloring the irises: I didn't have to be precise, because the effect will not change the black of the pupils or the dark edges of the irises.
I used Adjust/Levels with an inverted brush mask to lighten the lower half of the irises a bit. I show the brush mask I used for the lower half of the irises.
Again using Adjust/Levels and an inverted brush mask, I applied more lightening to a smaller part of the lower half of the irises. I show the brush mask I used for the second lightening of the irises.
Using Brush/Paint, I painted catch lights onto the eyes. The catch lights should be facing the light source consistent with the direction from which the subject is lit. I used the default brush, but experiment with different brushes. Often I also reduce the opacity of the Brush/Paint effect, for less bright catch lights.
I used Style/Coherence at low opacity, with an inverted brush mask, to smooth out the gradations in tone in the irises.
I used Style/ET Flow to smear the catchlights around the iris a bit. You'll want to experiment with the sliders and blending modes, although the defaults worked well for this image.
For a more 3D feel, I used Tone/Pastel with the gamma slider moved to the left a bit to apply a soft yellow/gray shadow to the corners of the eyes, using an inverted brush mask. I show the brush mask I used to shadow the corners of the eyes.
