Enter Sanjeeb Panday (callsign 9N1SP) who has been working for years to help more Nepalis get licensed. Supported in part by Radio Mala, Panday has made amateur radio an important part of his engineering curriculum.
“My students have been really inspired to get involved in local relief and recovery efforts because they saw the impact amateur radio can have,” says Panday. “They were always asking me how we could help.” Together, they installed the repeater at Tribhuvan in 2013, and Panday helps his students get licensed.

Amateur Radio’s “vital role” in the 2015 Nepal earthquake response was the topic on June 2 as the City of Santa Clara, California, hosted Sanjeeb Panday, 9N1SP, of Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu Nepal. Given that the Silicon Valley and the Kathmandu Valley share the common geography of multiple, nearby earthquake fault lines, the subject was relevant. The Santa Clara Fire Department sponsored the presentation, with an eye toward applying the lessons learned in the wake of the Nepal earthquake to better prepare for a similar disaster in the Silicon Valley.

गत वर्ष नेपालमा भूकम्प जाँदा सञ्चारको प्रायः सबै सुविधाहरु विच्छेद भएको थियो । सञ्चारसुविधा टुटेपछि अधिकांशले सास्ती भोगे । छटपटाइरहेको त्यो परिस्थितिमा एकमात्र विकल्प सञ्चार सेवाको काम ‘रेडियो एमेच्योर’ले गरेको यसको प्रयोगकर्ताहरु बताउँछन् । हेर्दा वाकीटाकी जस्तै देखिने रेडियो एमेच्योर विपत्तिको बेला उपयोगी हुने उनीहरुले बताए । विशेष गरी फोन जस्ता सञ्चारको सेवा अवरुद्ध भएको बेला यो सुविधा प्रयोगमा आउने डा सन्जीव पाण्डेले बताए । उद्धार कार्यमा बढी काम लाग्ने यो रेडियो सेवा इन्जिनियरिङ क्षेत्रका प्राविधिकहरुको संस्था एमेच्योर रेडियो क्लबले सुरु गरेको हो । नेपालमा त्यतिखेर डा पाण्डे र उनको समुहले एमेच्योर रेडियो प्रयोगमा ल्याएका थिए । उनीहरुलाई अमेरिकास्थित सिलिकन भ्याली र काठमाडौं भ्यालीबीचको साझेदारीमा ग्लोबल नेपालीज प्रोफेसनल नेटवर्क (जिएनपिएन) को मद्दतमा काठमाडौंमा एम्येचर रेडियो सञ्चालन गरेका थिए ।
