Introduction to Advanced Manufacturing
Table of Contents
This book contains 10 chapters.
Chapter 1, Introduction to Manufacturing, presents a general introduction to manufac- turing families, manufacturing evolution, and materials in manufacturing.
Chapter 2, Deformative Manufacturing, introduces deformative manufacturing including both forming and casting processes. The chapter further details rolling, forging, extrusion, and sheet metal processes. The chapter also details sand casting and die casting.
Chapter 3, Subtractive Manufacturing, develops subtractive manufacturing topics such as milling, turning, and drilling.
Chapter 4, Additive Manufacturing, introduces the reader to additive manufacturing key technologies such as fused filament fabrication, selective laser sintering, and stereolithography.
Chapter 5, Assembly Processes, details assembly processes such as mechanical joining and welding.
We introduce CAM in Chapter 6, Computer Aided Manufacturing. CAM is introduced in the context of the numerical chain with a detailed understanding of the math- ematical foundation of CAM, manufacturing references, and generation of G-Code.
Chapter 7, Polymers Manufacturing, specifically introduces deformative manufacturing of polymers manufacturing such as extrusion, injection, and blow molding. This chapter also covers fundamentals of polymer materials in the context of manufacturing.
Chapter 8, Composites Manufacturing, is tailored toward composites manufacturing, a subset of additive manufac- turing. We introduce automated fiber placement, a prominent and rapidly developing composite manufacturing process, and illustrate the basics of composite materials in the context of manu- facturing.
Chapter 9, Manufacturing Quality Control and Productivity, focuses on manufac- turing productivity and quality, with topics such as cycle time, cost estimation, design for manufacturing, inspection methods, statistical tools, and design of experiments being intro- duced.
The book ends with Chapter 10, Smart Manufacturing, on innovation in the context of Smart Manufacturing.
