Person 1 (Jayden)

There was a lot of agreement. The only one he really challenged was the quiet and serene one he said it could have been for another one or that his form of quiet and serene is different. Jayden's form of quietness is something with words rather than something without words like the one we have our our playlist.

No they did not. There was only one they did not agree with, but all four people in our group did.

Pearson 2 (Sarah)

Sarah guessed all 6 out of the 6 songs I played correctly. She noticed that there was a clear difference between all the songs and the categories they fit into when I showed her the wheel.

No, Sarah did not suggest any other songs off the top of her head while listening to the music.

Person 3 (Leah)

My roommate Leah agreed with all eight of the songs. She plays the cello and has a lot of musical insight. She said that some definitely fit into the categories better than others but all do characterize the emotions reflected into categories.

Leah didn’t suggest any other songs to put into the categories; she has a simpler taste in music than the individuals in our group. She had never heard one of the songs but still was able to recognize what category it fit under, and what emotions it reflected.

Person 4 (Dorian)

My roommate guessed 6 correct on the first try and the other two right on the second try.

The only two he didn't get right on the first try were “Heal” and “this is what heartbreak feels like.” He did get them correct on the second attempt though.

Faculty member (?) Sarah RA

Sarah did not agree with 2 of the songs “this is what heartbreak feels like” and “the spins”. She said they are very similar and couldn’t decide which category they went under.

Sarah suggested we change “the spins” to ‘what was I mad for” by Billie Eilish

What are my opinions on controversial things in music? I would say personally I don’t love sex, violence, or suicide in music. However, I know a lot of people in my generation. I would say I do sometimes listen to things with these kinds of topics in them, but I wouldn’t specifically choose them to listen to. For example, I like "Low” by Flo Rida and things like that. But I think the ones talking about suicide is too much. I understand that some people relate to it and I get that but I don’t like how it is exposed to younger children. Because they are exposed to it, they could think that is the only way to stop the pain or help their mental health if they don't understand it yet. I think this goes along with violence too, because the more people talk about it the more it will get normalized. I just don’t like songs that kind of promote those kinds of things. I can sometimes tune out the lyrics, but it can be hard sometimes. Like when the rhythm of the song is good I will listen to it, but not when the rhythm isn’t good or the lyrics. I think when I used to listen to music that talked about being depressed and dark stuff it was not good for my mental health because it was constantly blasting negativity into my head. It wasn’t portraying a message of not getting out of being depressed. It was not portraying anything positive and I was noticing it was having a very negative effect on me and my mental health. I think my generation has just gotten used to having so many negative things in music and I think this contributes to why our generation has such bad mental health. I realized that when I cut out this kind of music it improved my mental health and well-being. I don’t know if this applies to everyone but it definitely did and does for me.

Music and Movement

My emotional state before this exercise has not been the best. I have been sick and have fallen a little behind on my schoolwork. However, I have been getting caught up on it during the past couple of days. The exercise I chose was 6-2 in music within you. It was to have a dance party with one or more of your friends and listen to loud music. So during this dance party, I guess you would call it. I tried to slow down and sit still like it says to try in the instructions and this is what I realized. Firstly, it was really fun and I didn’t want to stop because of the rush of serotonin I got, but I was a little tired from jumping and I needed to rest for a second. Lastly, the mood I had been in had changed in front of the rush of serotonin that had hit me. However, I still needed to do schoolwork. I would say those worries had been pushed to the side for the time being. So I guess you could say my friends and I haven’t done this kind of thing before. However, after we had finished our dance party in my dorm we all agreed it is something we should do more often. Some of my suitemates really enjoyed it and some of them did not. In the beginning, we were all dancing, and one by one they all filled out leaving my roommate and me. One of them said it didn’t affect their mood at all, and then some of them said it had the same effect as it did on me, that it was a good distraction from all the homework they had to get done. I don’t think anyone can know if their dancing is right. It kind of just comes naturally to some people and then doesn't come naturally to other people. The cool thing about dancing is it doesn’t really matter because we're all just having fun. They said they could see themselves attending/doing this kind of thing again because they were not used to doing it in the first place. However, they did say as I had mentioned earlier that they would do it again because it had a positive impact on some of them. I would say my personal mental state was better after this event. However, it did not change that I would later still be stressed about the large amount of work I needed to finish. It was a fun exercise that I will most likely do again.
