My name is Mike Matiasek, and I will be your instructor for the lecture and lab portions Microbiology (BIOL 15) at Butte College this semester. Please, call me Mike or “Micro-Mike” 😊. If you want address me with my last name it is pronounced “mah-teye-sec”. I am looking forward to helping you discover the vast and often underappreciated microbial world this semester! As you will soon find out, I absolutely love teaching and the field of microbiology!
This 17-week course is offered in a hybrid format, combining online lectures with in-person labs. The lecture component consists of recorded videos and online activities, while labs are held in SCI 142 on the main campus in the brand new Science Building!
The course begins on January 26th or 27th, 2026, depending on your section. Canvas will be accessible on that Monday, so aim to start the online portion of the course then. Please notify me in advance if you cannot attend the first lab to avoid being inadvertently dropped.
Your lab is scheduled for 1 hour and 50 minutes twice a week in SCI 42, including a 25-minute activity segment. During labs, you will conduct experiments involving the cultivation, manipulation, and observation of microbes. Lab activities will also include scenario-based exercises and worksheets related to these experiments.
Lectures consist of pre-recorded videos and online assignments, to be completed at your own pace but with weekly deadlines. Each week, expect 4-7 videos featuring interactive quizzes to enhance engagement. Follow the provided link to preview the first week of video lectures.
To reinforce lecture material, a required 50-minute in-person activity session is also scheduled weekly in the same lab room.

OpenStax Microbiology Textbook: Available for free online. Take notes and highlight within your browser or download a PDF. A new copy is available for $63 from the college bookstore or you can rent it from the bookstore for $47.25. You can also find used or new copies on Amazon, but note that the online version is the most up to date.
BIOL 15 Laboratory Manual is available in three possible versions
Option A: Complete BIOL 15 Laboratory Manual: This is the complete lab manual which includes the lab protocols, lab report worksheets and the activity worksheets. If you get this option you will have a paper copy of everything you need for the course (except the pathogens packet, see below). This will be available at the the Butte College Bookstore the week before the semester starts for $52.25.
Option B: Worksheets only BIOL 15 Laboratory Manual: This version of the lab manual only contains the lab report and activity worksheets. It does not contain the laboratory protocols. To make this option work, you will also need to download option C onto a tablet or laptop so that you can follow the laboratory protocols in lab. This will be available at the the Butte College Bookstore the week before the semester starts for $22.25.
Option C: Complete BIOL 15 Laboratory Manual (Digital Version): This is a free to download digital pdf of the complete lab manual which includes the lab protocols, lab report worksheets and the activity worksheets. Get this option if you want to bring a laptop or tablet to lab to follow the lab protocols. You would still need to complete the lab report and activity worksheets. You could complete them digitally and then print them off for analog grading or you could purchase option B so that you have paper copies of the worksheets.
BIOL 15 Pathogens Packet is available in two possible versions:
Option A: BIOL 15 Pathogens Packet: This is a print out of the complete pathogens packet. There are no embedded worksheets to complete and turn in. You will only need this document as a reference to complete online assignments. This will be available at the the Butte College Bookstore the week before the semester starts for $12.75.
Option B: BIOL 15 Pathogens Packet (Digital Version): This is a free to download digital pdf of the complete pathogens packet. There are no embedded worksheets to complete and turn in. You will only need this document as a reference to complete online assignments.
Computer or Laptop: Ensure it has a reliable internet connection and an updated operating system and web browser to complete the online portion of the course.
Lab Coat: Long sleeves, mid-thigh length. Free options may be available on the first day; new ones can be purchased at the bookstore.
Safety Glasses or Goggles: Goggles are available at the bookstore but I recommend safety glasses for a more comfortable fit. Safety glasses are available at all local hardware and automotive parts stores.
Scientific Calculator: Must have log functions and exponents (graphing not required), available at the bookstores, and office supply stores.
Colored Pencils: For lab and activities.
Recommended Apps:
Canvas App: Download the app for your Android or iOS device. If you are having trouble viewing content on the app, try using a mobile web browser or computer instead. The mobile app does not display all content and features.
Labscope App: Used to connect your mobile device, laptop or tablet to your digital microscope in lab. (android, iOS or windows)
Obtain all the required materials listed above.
Complete the Orientation Module by Wednesday
This includes several pages of reading, several videos and culminates with a quiz on the Syllabus.
