Course Director
Sylvia Botros-Brey, MD, MSCI, course director, is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Urology, OB/GYN and Medical Education. She has served in multiple leadership roles throughout her career both nationally and internationally, and currently serves as the Executive Director of the Academy of Educational Scholars and Assistant Dean for Faculty at the Long School of Medicine. She has over 50 peer-reviewed publications and her current research focus is understanding which factors promote optimal clinical learning environments through the use of an innovative educational modality called Forum Theatre.
Dr. Daniel Dent is the chair of the Department of Medical Education and Professor and vice chair for education in the Department of Surgery in the Division of Trauma and Emergency Surgery at University of Texas (UT) Health San Antonio.
Dr. Dent’s clinical practice is in Trauma, Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery. He is a native of Orlando, Florida who completed a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Duke University. Dr. Dent obtained his medical degree from the University of South Florida. As a student, he worked summers and holidays for the Walt Disney Company for 11 years. He subsequently completed his residency at the University of Tennessee in Memphis; his residency included an additional year of research in Trauma and Nutrition Support.
Dr. Dent joined the faculty at UT Health San Antonio in 1996 and has received numerous teaching excellence awards as voted by medical students and residents. As a result of his commitment to surgical and medical education, he was named a Distinguished Teaching Professor by the University of Texas System in 2010 and received the UT Health San Antonio Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence in 2016. He is a past President of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery and past Chair of the General Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery (ABS). He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of both the ABS and the ACGME (Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education).
Joshua Hanson, MD, MPH, MBA is currently an associate professor of medicine at University of Texas Health, San Antonio. Dr. Hanson joined the faculty of the Long School of Medicine in August 2011. Dr. Hanson is a general internist and hospitalist who has been engaged in undergraduate medical and graduate medical education for the entirety of his career, working in student affairs for the majority of that time.
Since September 2022, he has served as associate dean for student affair and leadership training..
Prior to joining Long School of Medicine, he served as clinical instructor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, where he assisted and led in the development of a nighttime faculty service at Moffitt-Long Hospital. He earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Texas and his medical degree from Washington University. Additionally, he holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of California, Berkeley and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Texas, San Antonio.
His teaching has been recognized by several medical student, resident, or departmental teaching awards. He has also received the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, which is given to a faculty member who best demonstrates the Gold Foundation’s ideals of outstanding compassion in the delivery of care, respect for patients, their families, and healthcare colleagues, and clinical excellence. His areas of interest and research have been medical academic progression, Medical College Admission Test validity, medical student academic outcomes, and professional identity development. He has given numerous regional and national presentations and published multiple peer-reviewed papers in these areas. He was instrumental in LSOM’s successful Liaison Committee on Medical Education re-accreditation in 2019. In the last several years, Dr. Hanson’s reputation as a student affairs affairs content expert has expanded nationally. He currently serves on several groups, including the Southern Group on Student Affairs Executive Committee, the Next Step 1 Project, and the AAMC’s Equitable and Inclusive Practices in Student Services Working Group. Since 2022, he has assumed responsibility for two LSOM faculty development programs: the Executive Development Program and the LSOM EMBA program. These are conducted in partnership with the University of Texas San Antonio College of Business. Along with those he is program director for LSOM’s MD-MBA program.
Janet F. Williams, M.D., FAAP, is a tenured Professor of Pediatrics at the UT Health San Antonio Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine (LSOM) where she has served the past 12 years as the LSOM Vice Dean for Faculty. Through this position she provides comprehensive faculty career support programs. In addition, she developed, and her Office for Faculty oversees, efficient electronic pathways that support all major faculty processes through a faculty process specialist partnered with each LSOM component.
Dr. Williams continues to provide direct care for patients from infancy through adolescence in the General Pediatrics’ teaching clinics. Her academic scholarship expertise has included building faculty process efficiency and effectiveness, child and adolescent growth and development, and education about healthy choices and substance use prevention. She was twice awarded the UT Health SA Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching and served as a founding member of the campus Academy of Master Teachers, and the recently inaugurated LSOM Academy of Educational Scholars. She was honored to be designated a UT System Distinguished Teaching Professor and was elected to The UT Kenneth I. Shine, M.D., Academy of Health Science Education where she continues to serve in leadership. She additionally serves on the UT Health Institutions’ Physician Burnout Working Group, reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor of Health Affairs.
Dr. Williams is nationally recognized for her education, research, process and policy development through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Association of American Medical Colleges Groups on Faculty Affairs, Women in Medicine and Science, and Diversity and Inclusion.
Dr. Frank Rosinia is a certified Executive Coach and the founder of Pascal Leadership Coaching. His diverse background in healthcare and academia includes experience as a physician, entrepreneur, healthcare senior executive, and Department Chair.
He now serves as a professor at UT San Antonio Alvarez College of Business. Through Pascal Leadership Coaching, Dr. Rosinia shares his career insights to help achieve a balance between hard and soft skills, enabling them to excel and foster thriving organizational connections.
Mikel LaPorte is a Learning and Development professional with over 23 years of experience in the field, 15 of those being in an academic medical center setting. Mikel currently serves in the role of Assistant Director, Learning & Leadership Development Strategies at UT Health San Antonio, and has led learning and organizational development teams at Cape Cod Healthcare, OU Health, and UT Southwestern Medical Center. Mikel holds 2 master's degrees, a MS in Counseling Psychology, and an MBA with an HR emphasis. Mikel has several years of executive coaching experience and has coached hundreds of physician and non-physician leaders. Mikel’s personal mission aligns with his professional one, which is to help people achieve success as they define it.
Outside of work, Mikel is an avid reader, an amateur photographer, and a pug dad.
Giovannie Hoff is the Manager for Learning and Leadership Development with the Office of Human Resources and has been with UT Health San Antonio for 3 ½ years.
Giovannie holds a Master’s degree from Texas A&M-Commerce and brings over 15 years of experience in learning, leadership, and professional development. Giovannie’s role with UT Health San Antonio is to support the learning and development for faculty and staff across the institution.
