The goal of this experience is to promote Grassroots Sustainability through education and demonstration the historical forces that have brought us to where we are now. Acknowledging that using Things knowing that through time and use, maintenance, repair and eventual repurposing will be required is stewardship. Stewardship is our active link between natural process and human design, a prerequisite to sustainability.

It was Aristotle in 400 BCE who claimed that a household should be self-sustaining (as much as possible) and be not just consumption oriented. Indeed the skills of yesterday are valid tools for today.

Soft Soled Shoes

Our shoes are made of high quality top grain leather and thread, simple, pure, and clean. Our shoes are totally handmade, from the cutting out, sewing, punching holes and lacing. Our design is based on a medieval turn shoe. A turn shoe is simply a shoe that is constructed inside out and then turned right side out after it is sewn. The advantage of this is that the sole stitches are on the inside so they are not abraded by being treaded upon. Our turn shoes are made entirely of soft leather, are flat soled and have a left and right. These shoes feel like a fitted leather mitten for your foot. For a different fit, a commercial insole could be inserted. Remember these shoes pre-date cement and asphalt, so for comfort and durability, kindly avoid abrasive surfaces.

A word on Grounding, or Earthing: Our single leather sole shoe maintains a conductive contact between your feet and the Earth. Some believe there is a beneficial flow of electrons between Earth and body, and that by reconnecting with the Earth’s electrical potential, health benefits have been claimed.
