As you practice for your audition, focus first on WORDS, TIMING, and CHARACTER CHOICES. Stephen Sondheim, the composer of this musical, puts a LOT of words into every single song, and the words are where the character lives. We are looking for strong character choices and great diction–we REALLY want to understand the words!Â
First, practice saying the words with the Voice Track while looking at the sheet music. Speak them with expression! When you feel comfortable, move to singing along with the Voice Track. Next, sing with the Rehearsal Track, which has a count off with your starting note and guide notes playing your part. Finally, practice performing with the ‘No Voice’ or ‘Final’ Track–this is the track you will be performing with on your audition day.
