The Interplay International Experimental Media Showcase was born as an initiative by Prof. Alvaro Collar during his time serving as Dean of the School of Cultural Technology at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in 2024.Â
Since then he has been collaborating with prestigious art institutions in China such as Taicang Art Museum, Suzhou Bay Digital Art Museum (EDCC), H+ Museum, Fishtank Art Studio, and Hanshan Art Museum to create a showcase of the best experimental media from both inside and outside the academic world. This biennial collaboration brings together a unique fusion of academic innovation, offering a platform for cutting-edge experimental media.
The Interplay 2024 edition showcased the most innovative and exciting video works from around the world, welcoming submissions in video art, avant-garde and experimental short films, animation, fashion films, documentaries, and more.
The 2026 edition will continue to celebrate experimental moving image art while also including a special focus on innovative works exploring artificial intelligence as a creative medium.
