Overview

For decades, regulators and scholars in the Global North have been talking about regulation concerning the Global South: How to build a world order that leaves behind colonialism, how to globally protect the environment and how to effectively export human rights. Conversely, scholars in the Global South have been discussing measures to strengthen the autonomy of the Global South: How they might protect their interests in treaty negotiations, how they might shield their economies against foreign influences and how they might ensure a truly level playing field that is free of (also de facto) imperialism. Despite there being a clear need for dialogue on those issues, discussions have so far been mostly happening within the echo chambers of the respective hemispheres.The conference seeks to join these monolithic discourses into a real dialogue by bringing together researchers and practitioners from countries of the Global North and South, India and Germany in particular. It serves as a marketplace of ideas, an opportunity for research exchange and an incubator for future research cooperations between Germany and India. The event aims to contribute to closing existing research gaps between Global North and Global South. It therefore addresses topics that, albeit important, are so far underrepresented in research because they require cooperation between researchers from both hemispheres which – thus far – rarely happens. The project serves as a platform for initiating future research collaborations between Germany and India, leveraging the strengths and expertise of both nations. It will facilitate the exchange of innovative ideas, methodologies, and research findings, laying the groundwork for long-term partnerships and bilateral projects.

Framework

The conference will have two parts: A postdoctoral symposium and a senior researchers conference (Law Professors Meet).
At the postdoctoral symposium, postdoctoral researchers as well as junior professors from Germany and Indian assistant professors will discuss contemporary topics of International Law and Comparative Law. The event will last two days, October 15-16. Participating researchers will be divided into tandems working on the same issue from the perspective of their jurisdiction. The tandems will be encouraged to exchange their ideas in the months leading to the conference so the presentations will be cohesive even though they provide different perspectives on their shared subject.
The Law Professors Meet will be held October 16-17. The concept behind this event is an exchange of research and perspectives between already established researchers (associate and full professors) from India and Germany. The connection between the postdoctoral symposium and the Professors Meet has the advantage of providing an opportunity for intergenerational exchange between established and junior researchers.

National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) is committed to the creation of an ethical legal culture, which protects and promotes the rule of law.
