The first introduction of fencing is seen through swordsmanship in ancient Greece and Europe. Originally, the purpose of fencing was for duels and self- defense, the duels grew in popularity in Europe around the 13th century. During the 16th century, fencing schools became present in Renaissance Italy, which increased fencing’s popularity. Also, during this time there was a shift from using a heavy sword to using a light rapier. The first Olympics, in 1896, included fencing, and the first Olympics to include women’s fencing was in 1900. The introduction of fencing into the Olympics only gave it more popularity, causing the sport to go through changings. Since the introduction of modern fencing there have been many alterations to improve the sport, this includes different protection, better ways to count score, and safer equipment.
During the 18th century fencing grew in popularity in places like France and Italy through the introduction of fencing schools. In the start of the 19th century it spread throughout Europe and around the world with the help of clubs and societies that saw fencing as a good way to pass the time. Something that allowed fencing to be spread around even more was the first Olympics in 1896, because other countries were able to fully see what fencing is and form their own teams to compete against others. After this, fencing became an established sport in most countries around the globe
Fencing was officially introduces to the US on April 22, 1891, by a group of fencers forming the “Amateur Fencers League of America”. The US was one of the competing countries of fencing in the first Olympics.
The home of the US Fencing office is in Colorado Springs, but fencing is played in groups and clubs all across America. The most popular places in America for fencing is Columbus, Phoenix, and Orlando. There is no limit on who can participate, as people of all ages and gender can participate.
