One of the most important part of the student culture is the overalls. Often the dress code for student events and parties are the overalls. The overalls are meant to protect your clothes from partying and even if the overalls get dirty while partying, the unwritten rule is that they should not be washed during the student years. One of the reasons why the overalls are so popular among students is that they are meant to unite students of each faculty and also separate them from other faculties. The color of the overalls and the text on the back specifies in which city and what subject one is studying. Students collect badges that they earn from the student events and they can also collect pins and utensils, that will be put on the overalls. All these tell stories about their student and party history.
The overalls were originally used by Swedish students in the 1970s. From there it spread among the Tech students and later on to other faculties. About the Finnish student life, the overalls culture found its way in the early 1980s, when the students of Vaasa University of Applied Sciences started wearing them and later on their example was followed by other Universities.
