The intent of this book is to provide the interior design student a well-rounded knowledge of Autodesk Revit tools and techniques. These skills can then be applied to enhance professional development in both academia and industry. Each book also includes access to nearly 100 video tutorials designed to further help you master Autodesk Revit.

The overall premise of the book is to help you learn Revit while developing the interior of a two story law office. At the start of the book you are provided an architectural model with established columns, beams, exterior walls, minimal interior walls and roofs in which to work. This allows more emphasis to be placed on interior design rather than primary architectural elements. The chapters' chronology generally follows the typical design process. You will find this book helps you more accurately and efficiently develop your design ideas and skills.

The first chapter introduces you to Revit, Building Information Modeling (BIM) and the basics of opening, saving and creating a new project. The second provides a quick introduction to modeling basic elements in Revit including walls, doors, windows and more. This chapter is designed to show you how powerful Revit truly is and to get you excited for the rest of the book.

The remainder of the book is spent developing the interior space of the law office with an established space program. You will learn how to view and navigate within the provided 3D architectural model, manage and create materials and develop spaces with walls, doors and windows. Once all the spaces are added to the model, several areas are explored and used as the basis to cover Revit commands and workflows.

Revit is vastly more sophisticated than SketchUp when generating 2D images and produces superior results (plans, sections, elevations, RCP, etc). These types of 2D drawings are created automatically. Basically, everything is created as a 3D model in Revit and 2D drawings are generated automatically as a result. I believe the process of using Revit actually makes you a better designer as you have to constantly test the result of your designs three-dimensionally.

This program is used by any interior design firm creating projects of any type of design. I believe commercial companies were among the first to adopt the software. It also includes capabilities for other disciplines like Structural and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing) engineers, all within the same program while producing files that can be shared between each of these disciplines and interior designers. Coordination becomes much easier with a shared model. Although it can create 3D models of furniture design, I find 3D Studio Max a better solution for creating those types of objects.

In a larger project most likely the interior design firm is working within the Prime Consultant: Architect's Revit Link. This means that we rely on the coordination of interior Walls, Floor, and Shell (and worksets (or lack thereof)) of their model. I noticed right away after joining a project that our technologist had "Modeled in Place" all of our walls on top of their link in order to gain control of the interior design. Obviously, that's a tonne of work and does not scale well at all! Not only does that cause coordination issues, but it messes with all of Revit's built-in wall tool and functionality. This is what I want to do:

I understand this is a new product and there are major technology issues to figure out on the Rhino and Revit ends, but hoping one day the process improves - particularly for interior-design level work.

Some professionals have struggled with using Revit for developing interior projects from start to finish, partly due to the scarcity of modern 3D objects to meet the needs of an architecture project in BIM. As a result, the search for quality objects for Revit required time, patience and a lot of creativity.

Realizing this need among professionals, Blocks developed a free plug-in for Revit, which has a library of furniture, lighting and decor. Every week, users have access to new editable families, with the biggest trends in the architecture and interiors market.

As I am the author of the only Revit textbook focused on Interior Design, Interior Design Using Autodesk Revit 2019, one could say the topic is near and dear to my heart! In this article I would like to share several tips and best practices for interior rendering in Revit with Enscape that anyone can use to create amazing interior graphics.

To emphasize how easy Enscape is to use for interior design rendering in Revit, I created a custom design using a sample project, just for this article. The design effort and graphics all took about 8 hours to create. Using competing contemporary software and workflows, the rendering effort alone would likely take this same amount of time, including static post-production efforts.

By the way, some elements in the design were manufacturer-created and downloaded or borrowed from another project, and other elements are completely custom. I created the bookcase and rolling library ladder and downloaded several elements from BIMobject.

While not meant to be a dramatization, we will discuss a few ways to go from the descriptive image on the left to the emotive one to its right. Considering lighting, materials, and entourage, to name a few fundamental elements, goes a long way in creating amazing, dynamic and easy to update graphics while fully engaging in the design process.

A good interior lighting solution is not always easy to depict in a computer-generated illustration. Too often, lighting is underwhelming or faked in architectural renderings. But, with a physically-based rendering engine such as Enscape, we can get closer to reality without needing to add fake or hidden area lights and make time-consuming post-production edits in Photoshop (or a similar image editing program). When using the techniques mentioned here and in the next section on materials, quality lighting helps set the overall tone of the scene. And, if the image seems off, it just might mean the lighting design needs to be reconsidered, not that the rendering needs superficial adjustments.

The thoughtful use of lights, materials, and model-based entourage can transform a descriptive image into an emotive graphic that will surely resonate with your clients and project stakeholders. Not to mention the freedom to improve the design without the worry of massive rework of your presentation materials.

Enscape empowers interior designers and architects to validate their design ideas as they design. It also facilitates a deeper sense of client comprehension. As I have mentioned in several previous posts, Enscape can produce amazing results with minimal energy. But with a little extra effort and understanding of the tools and techniques, the results can be simply breathtaking!
