Presenting the Need for Interdisciplinary Learning Goals
2022 SUNY Empire State University Graduate Spring Conference
In this presentation, I analyze data from ArtScan at a Glance datasets spanning 2018 to 2023, revealing a decline in support for art education in U.S. public schools. This decline has spurred my mission to advocate for art education and foster interdisciplinary learning in all classrooms - and in response - I've developed a systematic approach for creating and implementing interdisciplinary learning goals!
As a holistic educator, I believe integrating the arts into academic subjects enhances student and educator well-being and promotes technology integration. My research shows that the arts, social-emotional health, and technology are crucial in today's post-pandemic classrooms.
Learning Goals: A Video Overview
In this video presentation, I highlight the benefits of Interdisciplinary Education and dive into the process of crafting tailored interdisciplinary curriculum. I'll guide you through the process of unpacking educational standards' language and demonstrate how to utilize a Standards Crosswalk to formulate Interdisciplinary Learning Goals (ILGs). Furthermore, we will delve into the significant role that arts education can play within interdisciplinary education, exploring ways to seamlessly integrate Arts Education standards into various academic subjects.
"Interdisiplinary Learning Goals"
2022 Presentation (updated 2023)
This presentation was presented at the 2022 Graduate Spring Conference hosted by SUNY Empire State University.
The presentation outlines not only the need for tools which support interdisciplinary education, but a systematic way to integrate these tools into exisiting standard-and-assessment based practices. I also outline my plan to grow Interdisciplinary Learning Goals into a user-friendly software application.
ILG 8th Grade Standard Crosswalk Overview
As part of the presentation, I led a Crosswalk activity to guide participants in studying linguistic commonalities between different 8th grade standard sets.
This was the Overview guide and Cross-tabulation data provided to partipants.
Participants received and worked with this handout to write one Interdisciplinary Learning Goal.
I also provided this Two-Phase Implementation Brief which summarizes the larger goal of implmenting ILGs into Standard-&-Assessment Based Units of Study.
