So, to Windows, it looks like an additional soundcard appears on your system, for which a driver is needed. So if you connect a monitor on the other end of your HDMI or DisplayPort and it can play sound, you can send sound to that monitor by selecting "Intel Display Audio" or similar as your audio device.

Some display interfaces, like HDMI and DisplayPort, can carry audio along with video. This audio stream might get played back by your monitor's internal speakers or you might send it to a dedicated "audio receiver", that strips off the audio signal, sends it out via e. g. S/PDIF, analog RCA or even digital (AES/EBU) or analog XLR.

I just installed a new hard drive with a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 64-bit downloaded from Microsoft's website and did the gazillion updates. All's well except for audio over HDMI. The present driver with the fresh install is "Microsoft Driver Version 6.3.9600.16384". I reinstalled the old hard drive, HDMI audio works again. The driver it uses is "Intel Display-Audio Driver Version 6.14.0.3097". I swapped the new hard drive back in and downloaded that Intel driver from a dodgy-looking website. All was well with HDMI but the machine took a while to shut down, even after several reboots. It seems like I downloaded something fishy. I wiped the hard drive and did another clean install.

3 - Look for "Display adapter", right-click on IntelĀ  HD Graphics and select uninstall, make sure to also select "Delete the driver software for this device", repeat the steps if necessary until the display adapter shows as "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter".

I have been testing this on-site, after downloading Minecraft 1.14.4.0 from the official Minecraft website, I tested this with the latest Windows build and the latest graphics driver available for the IntelĀ  NUC, there were no problems and the audio was played successfully through the speakers of the monitor via HDMI.

Yes the ASUS supplied drivers (which are the v30.0.100.9805 Intel drivers wrapped by the ASUS installer) do exactly the same. I have just installed them to test them, and the first sign is when it says WHAT it will install it doesn't list any audio drivers (see screen shot of the Intel installer that the ASUS package calls on) - and unsuprisingly, there is then no Display Audio available to the DP screen....

OK, I now understand it all --- this is on a music production PC where I have specifically disabled the onboard audio and I was trying to use the DisplayAudio through the iGPU (some simple use when working on other aspects of music production other than capturing, etc.) and I was assuming that the iGPU provided the audio itself rather than using any onboard audio hardware --- i.e. in the same way as, for example, the nVidia cards seem to provide their own audio codec for the display devices.

If I connect my laptop to the TV through "connect to a wireless display" everything is fine. Both video and audio are reproduced from my TV. In "audio and inputs" of device manager there is "digital output()" and in "sound->playback" "digital output" is normally present.

I wrote to ASUS and I am waiting for an answer. I cannot find anywhere ASUS sonicmaster Software / settings, I just have "ICEsound" and "conexant drivers" provided by ASUS (instead of "intel high definition audio") but changing settings/updating them is not helping the situation.

When I am offline with "Conexant audio drivers" uninstalled, "high definition audio" from intel appears as default playback sound device and sound on my laptop is fine but still I have no success making it work through the HDMI since "intel display audio" never appears as a device in the "sounds, video and game controller" in "device manager".

No, I do not think that will work. This seems like a design and integration issue with this laptop. If Asus chose to not expose the Intel display audio (and even the intel graphics), then there is not much you can do.

I want to point out that when I uninstall "conexant audio device" the system automatically sets "intel high definition audio" as default playback device and everything is working fine, until with an internet connection windows automatically updates the drivers and installs again the ASUS "conexant audio device". Anyway the "intel display audio" never appeared as a device.

The internal microphone had also stopped working after the above, including the mute button (fn F10), and including the disappearance of the microphone mute option on the right-click menu for the tray speaker icon. I resolved that by uninstalling "Conexant ISST Audio" in Control Panel/Pregrams and features, rebooting, and then, in Device Manager, re-installing the same drivers on the now unconfigured device via "Search automatically". The HDMI audio hiccups remain even after a BIOS update to v1.15A.

Well. That was an adventure. I tried that Conexant driver package, which I had tried before, and ended up in a far worse state than when I started. I eventually uninstalled every single related device and its drivers and re-installed using "Search automatically". This might take several passes on some devices to remove multiple (older) driver versions. I would suggest checking (and installing/re-installing) in the order shown below, and reboot after each install or de-install. A trip or two through the troubleshooter may also be needed.


Here is the stack I've ended up with. Except for the BIOS, these are all retrieved from Microsoft. I've had no succes with any of the HP-supplied drivers.


Speaker and microphone muting and unmuting work. Built-in and HDMI speakers work, but HDMI only after a reboot. In iTunes, I can play an album and then play another album as long as I do not pause the first. If I pause, there is no way to get HDMI audio going again. Headphones and other apps I'll save for when this is all fully working.

[Update: No problems with built-in speaker or headphones with any application. The problem is only with HDMI (Intel Display Audio), which is installed along with the display adapter driver. So, it doesn't seem that Conexant drivers have anything to do with it. There is a newer pair of display/audio drivers on the Intel driver download site, but won't install because they "have not been qualified" on this system.]

I was having trouble getting the audio work when my Book is connected to a display through a miniDP-HDMI adapter. After some research, it may have been graphics card driver issue, so I tried reinstalling, updating and tried beta drivers as well, but "Intel Display Audio" under Sound, video and game controllers would not show at all. Can anyone help me out restore this back? Thank you :)

A week ago I setup a new machine with a Gigabyte GA-Z97-HD3 motherboard and a Intel i5-4590 processor running Windows 10 Pro. I have all of the latest Intel drivers for video and the hdmi audio driver. I use the machine for a media server connected to my Samsung TV via HDMI. I had been having trouble with the Audio not working over HDMI. I had uninstalled and reinstalled the video/hdmi drivers many times with no change. I have a spare Nvidia graphics card that has HDMI audio that I tried and this card and the audio works fine. After some research and trial and error I uninstalled Hyper-V and the Intel HDMI audio worked fine after that. Are there any beta intel Display/Audio drives to try to see if they will work in Hyper-V on Windows 10? And just to confirm I had tried the latest driver from Intel as well as the motherboard manufacture. I had even tried an older Intel HDMI audio driver but that did not change the results when Hyper-V was installed.

Thank you for the reply. I did find those drivers yesterday and tried each one. I tried the latest stable version first and unfortunately no change with Hyper V installed.. I uninstalled those drivers and installed the Beta driver. I did notice with the Beta driver the HDMI audio drive was updated but again the HDMI sound did not work when Hyper V was installed. As soon as I uninstalled Hyper V the HDMI sound was restored (with both drivers in your post). Let me know if there is anything I can look at.

I had gone as far as installing a Nvidia graphics card with HDMI audio, then repeating the above steps and the audio will continue to work after installing Hyper V. The symptoms have only occurred when trying to use HDMI audio, over the Intel driver with Hyper V installed. And again to clarify, this is on Windows 10 Pro.

My D54250WYK NUC worked completely fine with Hyper-V and HDMI audio on Windows 8.1 and earlier. It only stopped working when the NUC was upgraded to windows 10 along with Intel-provided windows 10 graphics drivers. If you want to defer to Microsoft and say it's a problem with Hyper-V in Windows 10, that's fine but please provide the link stating it's a known issue from them because I can't find such a thing. Until then I'm going to assume that Intel drivers are playing some part in the problem. Intel and Microsoft are first tier OEM partners and this issue is reflecting terribly on you both (especially Intel in my eyes because of how long it has gone on without an appropriate response or resolution). Please do some actual testing with engineers and provide relevant feedback and resolution, not the canned replies or misdirection I have seen so far.

gomer240, I will post any updates here as requested by Amy: marszi has posted a viable workaround for now in the form of deactivating the VT-d feature in the visual BIOS (UEFI). As I mentioned before VT-d is fully supported by the D54250WYK CPU and Chipset but it appears there is a bug with it that is currently only affecting Windows 10 when Client Hyper-V is enabled. VT-d allows direct access to a PCI device for a guest VM which cuts down on emulation overhead of virtual PCI devices (typically used for direct access to a NIC). My educated guess is that there is a bug somewhere between the new hypervisor for Client Hyper-V in Windows 10 and the Intel display and/or chipset drivers. ff782bc1db
