While not all sensitive topics can be predicted, and not every issue will trigger a strong emotional response, being prepared for when these situations arise can help foster an environment of respectful discussion and discourse. This framework is designed to help you prepare for those potentially sensitive topics and provide strategies for facilitating thoughtful and respectful conversations in your classroom.
This framework provides guidelines for tackling sensitive and controversial topics in K-12 classrooms, encouraging both students and educators to engage with, rather than avoid, global issues. It aims to foster exploration and a deeper understanding of both local and global lived experiences.
Please use the following questions as an application of what you have learned throughout this module:
1. In your teachable subject, what is a sensitive topic you may integrate within a lesson?
2. Using the above information and frameworks, how might you prepare yourself for having sensitive discussions surrounding your lesson with a sensitive topic?
3. Using your previous answer, what is a unideal response you may be able to anticipate from your sensitive topic discussion? How would you handle the anticipated response?
4. Based on your anticipated scenario, do you feel prepared to have discussions with sensitive topics? Is there any additional Professional Development you would want to engage in to be better prepared?
