TRANSLATE LEONARD UPDATE - October 8th,  2019

The Entire Film, including the Epilogue and Deleted Scenes (DVD version), have been translated into Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. BUT, we are not done! Besides the programing/authoring of the three different Captions  into the DVD and eventual streaming services, I still need some funding and volunteer proof readers who are bilingual in English/Japanese, English/Chinese and English/Korean. I only raise about half the required budget  and so have been relying on volunteers to proof the film (a VERY challenging prospect as detailed below).

So I am looking for more volunteers to proof read the translations and make changes where necessary, AND funding to be able to give the proof readers at least some kind of stipend because it's really WORK. The solution is to either get multiple volunteers to take up sections or funding to properly pay three people. I hate to keep asking for money, but this stage is turning out to be impossible without more help/funding. Once properly translated, into "the big three" the film should interest an Asian Distributor.

THE CHALLENGE:

Most of the Japanese version has been proofed; some of the Chinese has been proofed, and none of the Korean has been looked at. The reason it has taken months is the translation service's first attempts sound like a either a computer or are just WAY too formal/non-conversational (although they claim it was done by a human), and everything to do with God makes no sense. It takes days to weeks just to come to this conclusion after I get the translation because a volunteer has to proof at least the first 5 minutes (I do NOT speak any Asian languages). So I end up rejecting the translation, and they give it to a next level translator who then takes weeks (the first version is done in days) and they usually get within 90-95%. Since I only raised about half the budget, I have been relying on (awesome) volunteers who then proof (retranslate where needed) the film which, in their spare time, has been taking weeks. Once finalized, we can't go back and edit the translation because it is going on the DVD and hopefully a streaming network once we have a distributor in Asia. So even the proofer must be proofed. There are two specific reasons this is no picnic to translate:

1) Theology is a tricky thing to translate into Asian languages when, to begin with, their definition of "God" is impersonal as opposed to the western idea of the personage of God... and from there, MANY issues flow.

2) Leonard spoke in "Leonardisms" (similar to Yogi Berra) or unique sayings which, besides never being grammatically correct, are best understood by people who really knew him... making several parts of the film a CHALLENGE for an Asian person who never met Leonard.

Solution: I have to explain what was behind the spirit of the phrase and then the proofer (who must be Christian to even have the vocabulary) has to decide to use a similar saying in their language, if there is one, or just translate it as best they can, all the while keeping pace with the video because we will only have so many seconds until the next sentence... so efficiency is really important too.

It's very fun and satisfying for the volunteers but it can be more time consuming than you can imagine.

PLEASE HELP IN ANY WAY YOU FEEL LED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT!!!
